“Honey, I’m home,” I joke, but my heart skips a beat when I say it.

Grayden pulls me into his strong arms and presses his mouth against me. I faintly hear the door closing, but the sound is soon forgotten because he uses his tongue to coax a low whimper out of me.

“Welcome home, baby,” he murmurs against my lips, a small smile playing on his mouth.

I’m so glad that he’s holding me up because my legs are seriously weak right now. This is everything I didn’t know I wanted. Coming home to him is the best thing ever.

“I made you dinner,” Grayden tells me as he takes my hand and leads me to the kitchen. “It was my first time following a recipe, so don’t get your hopes up.”

“It’s the thought that counts,” I reply, meaning it. “Besides, we can always order a pizza.”

“Thank God for that,” he says with an easy smile.

The table is already set. He even lit up a candle and opened a bottle of wine. It’s all incredibly romantic.

“Sit,” he orders gently, and I obey.

My eyes are glued to him as he moves around the kitchen. He seems comfortable enough in it. It’s clear that he already familiarized himself with the cupboards.

“How was your day?” he asks, his muscular back turned to me as he plates the food. Fuck, these pants make his ass look so hot.

“Long, but good,” I reply. “We didn’t lose any of the mass casualty patients. It was touch-and-go for a few of them for a while, but fortunately, they all pulled through.”

“It sounds like something worth celebrating,” he tells me, turning to me with a plate in each hand. “Days like these shouldn’t be taken for granted.”

I nod and smile when he puts one plate in front of me. My smile widens even further when I see what he cooked.

“What?” he asks with a smirk. “Don’t tell me you were expecting something more elaborate. I told you it was my first time following a recipe. We’ll build up to that.”

“It’s perfect,” I tell him, then take a small bite of the pasta. “Mmm. It’s good. Vodka sauce?”

“Yes,” he confirms with a grin. He tries a bite from his own plate, then nods in approval. “I did well.”

“You did,” I agree, then hold out my glass for him when he picks up the bottle of wine. “How was your day?”

Grayden’s face unexpectedly lights up. When he’s done filling our glasses, he sets the bottle down, and turns his full attention to me.

“I spent most of it at the Grey Manor because I got a call from Garren,” he says, and I raise my brow in surprise. “I know, I know. My reaction was the same.”

“Is everything okay?” I ask, though I suspect that his expression would be different if something bad had happened.

“Better than that,” Grayden says, then pauses long enough to take a bite and chew. I do the same, waiting for him to swallow, so he can continue. “Gavin and Garren suggested that we create a joint task force with the sole responsibility of keeping peace. They left it up to you and me to come up with possible names to use.”

“That’s a great idea,” I say, already seeing the possibilities of things that a team of witches and wolves could do. “We could organize them like the humans have their police system. They’d be put together in mixed pairings to assure fair and equal treatment of both species.”

“It would also give you enough freedom that you can keep doing your work at the hospital,” Grayden tells me, touching the burden that’s been weighing on me. “I know how much you love it. You’d only be called in for special events.”

“Are you sure?” I ask, holding my breath. When he nods, I smile in relief. “Thank you.”

“We all deserve to follow our dreams,” he tells me. “I didn’t know what mine was until all this began. Oh, and Gavin told me that Leia was very excited to be able to start up her charity projects again. I’m sure that once her maternity leave ends, she’ll be a big part of this.”

“When is she due?”

“Any day now,” Grayden replies and shakes his head. “I can’t believe I’m going to be an uncle.”

“And one day a dad,” I reply with a coy smile.

Grayden chuckles softly. A spark in his eyes ignites the flame when he looks at me. He slowly sets down his cutlery and gives me a seductive smile. “How about we finish this later?”
