Gabe: Hopeful, the word you’re looking for is hopeful.

Ameline: This is the plan. I figure out what to do with my sister and her children. Then, I head home and send you those papers. You sign them and we don’t see each other again.

Gabe: Do you really mean that?

Ameline: It’s for the best. I’m not just going to leave everything for another round of sorrow and misery.

Gabe: I can’t guarantee our future, but I can promise to love you and dedicate my time to make up for my past mistakes.

Ameline: You can’t fix the past.

Gabe: I understand that, but I can spend the rest of my life loving you. Show you that you’re the most important person in my life.

Ameline: . . .

Gabe: You don’t believe me and that’s perfectly fine. After I heard you divulge your side of our story to Lyric, I realized how much I fucked up. In my mind, I wasn’t pushing you away or neglecting. I was trying to fix the things that caused you pain—it was my way to deal with everything. My neurodivergent brain tries to deal with emotions but sometimes it’s hard for me to understand them well.

Ameline: Can we not discuss the past or us right now? We’re about to spend the night with Caleb and I want to make sure we’re focusing on him.

Gabe: Fine, I’ll let this go for now.

Gabe: We should be there in ten.

Ameline: You’re driving? Who is we?

Gabe: Jude is driving while I’m handling a few things and texting you.

Ameline: What are you handling?

Gabe: My schedule. I’ll be away for several weeks.

Ameline: What’s your specialty?

Gabe: Oncology.

Ameline: You became an oncologist?

Gabe: Yeah, why do you ask?

Ameline: What happened to becoming a pediatrician?

Gabe: I almost lost my wife and then we lost our baby.

Ameline: Have you thought about getting therapy?

Gabe: Yeah, I just asked my grandfather for a few referrals for Cora and me.

Ameline: Cora?

Gabe: Well, yes. You saw her behavior with the snacks and the conditions she’s been living in for the past few . . . well, I hope only weeks.

Ameline: No, I agree she needs a therapist, but I can’t pay for it. At least not until my next paycheck.

Gabe: I thought we agreed that I was paying the bills—we’re married. Also, with a high paying job, why is it that you don’t have money?

Ameline: Some of my clients need help so I provide it to them.

Gabe: Of course you do. More reason to use your husband’s resources.
