He grins. “That will make her happy. She loves her sweets.”

I laugh and he tips his baseball cap at me as he turns to walk away. I see a shadow move but then shake my head. I’m probably just imagining things. I’m just tired.

But my heart just won’t quit jumping around and my hands shake as I load up my things in the car and head out.

It’s just minutes until I get to the shop but as I pull in in the back, I gasp. The door’s standing wide open. I don’t see Jenny’s car anywhere and I know she’s not supposed to be here this early. My hands clench on the steering wheel and I frown as I see a shadow in a car that’s just pulled in behind me.

All of a sudden, an icy chill skitters across my skin and my heart pounds, my mouth going dry.

Something’s wrong.

Without getting out, I back out of the parking spot and then roar down the alley, my hands clenched on the steering wheel and my eyes darting around the inside of the car and the scenery whipping by.

I turn out of town and head straight for the ranch. And as I do, I see that same car behind me, its lights slicing the darkness of the receding clouds from a storm that’s moving in. The air stirs and shifts around me and my chest is tight, my eyes watering as fear builds inside me.

There’s only one thing pounding in my brain right now. I need to get to Rory.

But even as I feel the tightening and the still of the air shift to wild winds shaking the car, the car behind me taps my bumper and I scream, fighting the wheel, my terrified eyes closing and praying that I don’t die and that Rory finds me.

But I manage to keep the car on the road, tightening my hands on the wheel and praying under my breath.

I reach the very edges of the ranch and turn into the gate, my heart pounding as the damn car turns in right behind me.

He taps my bumper again and I jerk the wheel to get away from him, screaming as I lose control yet again and the car behind me rams into me, driving me into a fence line and everything goes black.

Chapter 12

Rory

I’m heading back to town when my phone rings. I pick it up and hit the speaker. “What’s up, Cody?”

“Man, some of the guys that are close to the gate are hollering that there’s an accident and they’re trying to get to the car but some guy is shooting at them. All hell’s breaking loose and I think that the car is Callie’s. Whoever it is, we need to get them out of there. This guy sounds crazy and that storm is moving in fast.”

“Fuck, fuck, fuck!” I slam my fist into the steering wheel and jerk it, slamming my foot down on the gas. “That motherfucker.”

It takes what feels like hours but is probably only minutes for me to reach the border of the ranch and its gates.

As soon as I get close I hear gun shots and I pull my truck over to the side of the road, grabbing my shotgun out of the back. I check to make sure it’s loaded and jog lightly up the track and then behind a copse of trees that grow alongside the fence, my eyes widening when I see the two cars. One is behind the other and it’s obvious that it’s pushed the first car into the fence. I groan when I see that it’s Callie’s car. The copse of trees is close to the accident but it’s still gonna have some open real estate that I have to cross.

Two of the guys come running up, breathing heavy. “What the hell man? Who’s this guy and what’s he doing here?”

“My girl is in the car and she’s got a stalker ex. That’s him.” I point at the blond guy shouting and waving a handgun around. He’s trying to get to the car but the guys keep putting bullets by his feet which is pissing him off big time.

“Leave me the fuck alone! She’s mine!” He screams and raises the gun again, firing at nothing but air.

I’m guessing he doesn’t know how to shoot which is why he only grazed Donut the other night. One of the new hands, Jacob nods at me.

“What do you want to do, boss?”

“I’m gonna confront the asshole. I don’t think he can shoot worth a shit. I’m going over there and put myself between him and Callie.”

He groans. “Do you think that’s a good idea?”

I grunt. “Probably not. But I’m not letting him get near her. Have you guys seen her move?”

Both of them shake their hands. “Okay. So I need to see how she’s doing too.”

I step out of the woods and head for the cars, trying to get close enough to tackle the asshole if I can. Trying to put myself between him and the woman I can’t live without. The wind skitters around my booted feet and I feel an occasional drop of rain.
