Eli and Gordon were still outside, kicking back in their chairs, but August ignored them.

I waved, not wanting them to be offended.

Eli waved back, but Gordon just glared.

“Gordon seems like a jerk sometimes,” I whispered to August.

He snorted. “He is one. And he’s going to follow us the whole time we’re in the sky, to make sure I don’t run away.”

“You wouldn’t do that.” I wasn’t sure why I felt so confident about it, but I did.

“Nope.” He let go of my hand, and peeled his shirt over his head.

I bit my lip as he unbuttoned his jeans, stepping out of them smoothly. His boxer-briefs followed.

“Step back, Fireball.” The command was smooth, not even slightly harsh.

I moved away, giving him more space.

August took a deep breath in, and his golden skin shimmered as he let it out. With his second inhale, his body changed. And with his second exhale, he stretched his scaled neck to the sky, loosing a small stream of fire.

Though I’d known dragon shifters existed, and seen pictures of them before, I couldn’t help but be awestruck by the sight of him.

He was massive.

Strong.

Elegant.

Powerful.

His deep silver scales glittered in the setting sun, the strong lines of his elegant body sharpened by the light filtering around them.

He was stunning.

August took a step toward me, lowering his head until we were eye-to-eye.

I sucked in a breath when he leaned forward.

And let it out with a laugh when he licked my cheek.

He lowered his belly to the ground, then set his head down right in front of me. I crouched, reaching for his nose with a questioning look.

August closed his eyes, giving me permission, and I closed the rest of the distance. My palm landed on his warm, smooth scales. There was something about them that felt sort of soft. Not like fur, or hair, but something else. I couldn’t put my finger on it, but they were comfortable.

He licked the underside of my arm, and a laugh escaped me.

His chest rumbled, the sound happy.

I smiled.

“Fly with me, Fireball.” His voice was in my mind, catching me off-guard. He had mentioned mental communication while he was in his dragon form, but I hadn’t really considered what it would sound or feel like.

“Are you sure?” I asked my question aloud, not certain if I could speak into his mind too.

And not sure he’d want me to, even if I could.

“I’m always sure.”
