My stomach rumbled loudly, and he handed me a fork.

Two entire to-go containers of food followed.

And both of us fell silent as we devoured it, bite after glorious bite.

When it was gone, I was full, and even more exhausted than I’d been before.

We set our empty containers to the side, and August tugged me onto his lap. My shoulder was against his chest as I leaned into him sideways, and his arms wrapped around me loosely. It wasn’t our typical position, but it was still nice.

Really nice.

Especially without any magic making me all hot and bothered.

“Want to watch a movie?” His voice was quiet, but I didn’t think much of it.

“You’re not tired?”

“I am. Just not ready to go to sleep yet.”

“A movie works, then. But I’ll probably fall asleep on you.”

He turned me around so my chest faced his, and pulled me closer. My face pressed against his neck, and he inhaled slowly.

Deeply.

Like he wanted to embed my scent into his lungs.

He turned a movie on—some chick flick we’d already watched in the past few weeks—and I relaxed on his lap.

“You’re beautiful.” His voice was quiet. “I can’t remember if I’ve told you that.”

“Thank you.”

He ran his fingers through my damp hair slowly.

Sleep started to lull me in once again, but he asked me, “Can I kiss you?”

The question caught me off guard, though not unpleasantly.

“It’s been a while,” I said.

“Too long.”

“I was surprised you weren’t running away from me an hour ago, and now you want to kiss me?” My voice was playful, but not entirely. There was some truth to the question.

“I have no desire to run from you.” His fingers continued to tease my hair, but his voice wasn’t anywhere near playful. It was serious. Almost solemn.

I lifted my face from his neck and studied him for a moment.

His expression was calmer than it had been when I was in pain, but that was a given.

His eyes were blue again, a gorgeous blue that anyone could get lost in. Me, in particular.

“You’re beautiful, too,” I finally said, setting my hand on his cheek. “You probably don’t want to hear that, but it’s true.”

His eyes shut, and he took a deep breath in.

“When we first met, I was the one doing that.”
