“As it stands, I’m actually on the lookout for new blood. My marketing department is lax, of late, and you, Scarlett… you might be perfect for the role.”

“What is it you sell?” I asked, and Sebastian lifted one brow as if the notion of me not knowing was surprising.

“I own a chain of restaurants and I want to showcase the food from the amazing chefs that work under me but so far, nothing that has been presented to me feels right. What you’re working on though; replace the flowers with food and I think you would understand my vision.”

My eyes widened. “Are you looking to hire me?”

“If you’re in the market. With full respect to your freelance commitments, of course.”

This was… incredibly unexpected. I glanced down at my laptop and eyed the work-in-progress design. It wouldn’t be too difficult to reimagine the designs, or something similar, to showcase the brilliance of Sebastian’s chefs.

“I would pay you handsomely, of course,” Sebastian added.

“It’s not that,” I admitted, glancing up. “I have to decide whether it’s something I want to put my name to.”

“I understand.” Sebastian nodded once.

“Why me?”

“Excuse me?”

“Well… I know the circles you run in. It doesn’t strike me as difficult to find someone more professional than me.”

“As I said, you caught my eye,” Sebastian replied, and his gaze slowly started to wander down over my much more simple t-shirt and jeans. “I’m intrigued and I always want the best. And you, Scarlett…” He paused and my heart punched up into my throat as the tip of his tongue lingered on his upper lip. “Let's just say I know what I want.”

Suddenly it didn’t feel like we were talking about the designs anymore. I shifted in my seat as another unexpected pulse of heat coiled through me and warmed my core.

“Do you ever feel that?” Sebastian leaned forward and his eyes darkened. “The desire to take something you want as soon as you see it?”

I nervously licked my lips and found myself nodding vigorously before I’d even given it much thought.

“Have you ever?”

“Ever what?” I asked softly.

“Taken something you wanted just because you need it. Because you’re certain your life will be infinitely better with that experience?”

“N-No.”

“Why not?”

“I…” I paused. That was a loaded question. “I’m not bold enough.”

“Do you want to be bolder?”

This definitely wasn’t about a job anymore and I was growing more and more curious about where this was going.

“Sometimes. If I was, maybe I wouldn’t be freelancing for one thing.”

“Be bold now.” The commanding air around Sebastian thickened suddenly and I almost couldn’t breathe. Not with the way his eyes watched me so intensely.

“How?” I asked, and it was as if we were the only two people in the entire cafe.

“Follow me.”

Before I could reply, Sebastian stood and turned on his heel, and then he headed toward the back of the cafe.

Toward the bathrooms.
