It was all for Toby?

I abruptly slid from my stool, snatching my purse close as the ground wobbled.

“Tell me it’s not true,” I whispered as tears flooded my eyes. “Tell me you weren’t fucking me to find dirt on me for Toby?”

They all fell deathly silent.

“Tell me!”

“It wasn’t like that,” Lucas spoke up. “I met you before I even knew who you were.”

“And after?” I snapped brokenly.

“Initially… yes,” Sebastian said, his voice tight. “Toby did ask us to find out about you, so we bumped into you but— Scarlett, everything after that was all you. We told Toby where he could stick it because we all saw how amazing you are. We all fell for you, we?—.”

“You used me?”

Sebastian faltered. None of them could speak.

I pushed Danny’s arms away as they approached me, and then I turned and ran.

The crowd split like my heart, giving me a path to stumble through on unsteady heels.

It wasn’t real. They weren’t real!

I had to get out of here.

LUCAS

“Scarlett!”

For a woman in such high heels, she melted into the crowd impossibly fast. Pushing past dancing bodies and indignant spectators trying to listen to Toby’s speech, I fought my way through in a less than dignified fashion, but Scarlett was gone.

Fuck!

Why couldn’t Toby keep his damn mouth shut?

Even if it was true. Even if Scarlett’s feelings and my own meant she deserved the truth. It shouldn’t have happened like this.

She didn’t deserve to learn that from her drunk brother at a ridiculous party right after revealing that she was falling in love. That was such emotional whiplash that by the time I made it around the crowd and reunited with Danny and Sebastian, I felt sick.

“Any sign of her?” Sebastian barked out.

Both Danny and I shook our heads.

“Fuck!”

“We should have told her,” Danny said. “And much sooner.”

“Maybe,” I agreed, one hand on my hip.

“There is no maybe,” Sebastian said firmly. “She deserved to know that we met her that way. But everything else after…”

“I don’t think she’ll care,” Danny said, his face crestfallen. “She won’t care that we fell for her, that we adore the hell out of her. All she will see is that we met her while trying to help Toby and I— I don’t blame her.”

I paced back and forth, dragging one hand through my hair as I dialed her number with the other.
