“Is everything alright in there?”
“OCCUPIED!” We both shout at the same time.
“… Alright.”
Stepping towards the bed, I try to get a closer look at my furious friend, but she just jumps off of the mattress, avoiding me like I’m the plague.
My mind races as I try to make sense of it all… even if part of me already knows what’s happening.
Don’t be naïve, Raymond!
“Were you drugged? Threatened?” I ask, desperate to find an excuse for her behavior. But I know there isn’t one.
“No,” Sonia sneers. “I was working.”
The unconscious frat boy at her feet groans and we both look down at him. But he doesn’t get up. Hell, he doesn’t even open his eyes.
Still, the reminder is well served.
“Some job this is,” I growl, fists clenching as a flash of brutal fury battles the deep pit of despair growing inside of me.
“Don’t be naïve, Raymond,” Sonia hisses back. “I’m always working.”
“Not even you would stoop so low…”
“Moron!” Sonia snaps, pointing down at the floor. “You see this pathetic fuck on the ground at my feet? He’s a senator’s son. The boy over at the foot of the bed? His uncle is the new chief of police. And that fucker you just nearly choked to death? He just got here, but I’m pretty sure I overheard someone saying he’s set to inherit his father’s CEO position at a fortune 500—”
“So what?” I interrupt.
“So, these idiots have money and power, Raymond. Lots of it. Enough that they probably wouldn’t mind giving some to a poor girl like me.”
“For sex?”
“Not for the sex,” she sneers, not denying that she was just about to fuck them, if she hasn’t already. “But for keeping quiet about how they took advantage of a poor innocent drunk girl.”
“You’re not drunk or innocent.”
“They don’t know that!”
“You cheater…”
“You idiot! I told you to stop following me!”
“I didn’t follow you here!” I begin to explain, before stopping myself. There’s no point. “… This isn’t you, Sonia.”
“This is exactly who I am, Raymond. I’m a woman who will do whatever it takes to succeed. Whatever. It. Takes. Obviously, you’re still too much of a child to get that.”
“You didn’t need to do this. I could have helped you escape…” I hear myself mumble, but I’m already moving towards the door, away from her.
This is too much, even for me.
“You’ll never be anything!” Sonia shouts after me. “Nothing but a loser! A lowly enforcer. An Irish punching bag. A pawn who dies at forty, working for some mob boss who couldn’t give two shits about whether you live or die. That’s not the kind of life I want to live. God has given me these tits and this ass. Fuck, maybe it wasn’t God, maybe it was the devil. It doesn’t matter. Men want this. Poor men and rich men. I’m here to make sure some rich man gets it. Then, I’ll never have to go back to that dump you call a home.”
“It’s our home,” I remind her, my hand already on the doorknob.
“That place is no home!”
“You’re right...”
