I roll away beneath them until I hit another wall.

“Right,” Tytus shouts.

I empty the rest of my clip into the fog.

“How many are left?” I heave, tossing aside my empty gun for a new one.

“You got them all,” Tytus says. “Good job.”

“The job’s not finished yet. Tell me where to go.”

“Oh shit!” Tytus curses, his weak voice crackling against the strain. “They’re on the move. Someone is dragging Rozalia away.”

“Where. Do. I. Go?” I growl.

“It looks like they’re heading up to the third floor. Push ahead. Straight ahead. I’ll shoot another smoke bomb in there. Don’t bother fighting. Just get to them. Get Roz.”

I don’t need to be told twice.

Pushing myself back onto my feet, I start to race forward. Behind me, a window shatters. Another flashbang erupts into the room. I stumble, but manage to keep my feet.

The fog thickens until I can barely even see the countless silhouettes storming toward me. Jumping against the wall, I hold my breath and let them pass.

To my relief, they all do.

I have to cough into my forearm as I peel myself off the wall and continue forward.

“When you pass through the next doorway, take a right.”

“What doorway?” I wheeze. “I can’t see shit.”

“Just hug the wall.”

That’s exactly what I do until I feel a door-latch. When my fingers brush across the cool metal, I make my right turn.

“How many people are with Roz?” I ask, feeling for another door latch or opening.

“Just three others. One of them is Leander, I’m sure of it.”

I don’t ask how Tytus knows. The second I feel an opening in the wall, I burst through it and up the stairs.

“Am I going the right way?” I ask.

“Yeah, they should be—wait, stop!”

Before I can heed his warning, I’m blindsided by a fist. It hits me directly in the temple, nearly knocking me back down the stairs.

“What the fuck…” I curse, stumbling into a wall. Pain throbs through my skull. I try to turn around. But before I can do that, a bullet rips through my shoulder. Then, another one slices across my calve.

An excruciating heat rips through my body as I fall to my knees.

“Rian!”

Rozalia’s voice cuts through the agonizing pain like a scythe. My aching heart jumps. But when I force my gaze up to search for her, I’m only met by the barrel of a gun.

The cold steel presses into the skin between my eyes.

“Say goodnight.”
