Lilianna glanced around the shop again. “I really love the way you’ve set up your store.”

She grinned. “Thanks.” She then paused a bit before saying, “Listen, I don’t have any job openings just yet, but if you’re going to be in the area nearby, I’ll keep you in mind if anything changes.”

“I don’t know if I’m going to be in this area permanently yet either, but if I do decide to put down roots, maybe I’ll come in and chat with you.”

“I’ll look forward to it.”

Lilianna looked out the window and saw Hunter exit the alleyway next to his shop. He looked around as if searching for something. Or someone. Probably her. He then glanced at the clock and walked in the opposite direction of the bank. He must either know another shortcut or have a stop to make.

Victoria looked along her line of sight, as well.

“I’ve got to go.” She pointed a thumb in Hunter’s direction. “I’m supposed to meet him in a couple of minutes.”

Victoria’s expression changed to one of astonishment. “You’re here with Hunter? Good for you. I must say, he’s quite the hottie.”

Lilianna wasn’t certain how to interpret that. “Yes. He’s very nice.” As in, he has a really nice ass and many other nice body parts that I’ve enjoyed immensely. Among other things that she wasn’t prepared to discuss with Victoria just now, like her sudden jealousy over whether Victoria knew anything about Hunter’s attributes firsthand. She stared out the window at him with an expression that likely didn’t say what she felt.

“Just between us girls, if you’re chasing after Hunter, good luck, but my advice is don’t get too attached. I don’t know this from personal experience or anything, but my understanding is that he’s not one for serious relationships. If you know what I mean.”

Lilianna smiled because Victoria didn’t know anything about Hunter from personal experience. She said, “Luckily, I’m not looking for serious.”

Victoria lifted a shoulder. “Okay. The way you just looked at him, I didn’t want you to get your heart broken without saying anything.”

“Thanks. I won’t.” I hope not anyway. She backed up a couple of steps, lifting the box. “And also thanks for the candy.”

“Hope you enjoy them. Come on back.”

She nodded and escaped out into the dusty street. Hunter spotted her and quickly turned around. His sexy smirk slid into place before he made it all the way to her. A horse-drawn buggy rolled by before she was able to cross the street and join him.

“How was your day?” he asked once she got across the street and into his personal space. He was staring down into her face like she was the only person on earth. Did he mean it? Or was he eventually going to tire of her because he wasn’t someone who had permanent relationships?

“I had an amazing day,” she said, having just come from her favorite store.

“Did you meet Victoria in the candy shop?”

She nodded and held up her small bag with her purchase. “I got the three of us a treat for later.”

He didn’t glance away from her eyes. “Good. Even though you’re a treat all on your own.”

She grinned.

They didn’t touch, but she truly wanted to. She moved closer and while at first he let her, he suddenly looked around as if he’d forgotten where he was for a moment. “I’m not actually supposed to fraternize with customers.”

“I’m not exactly a customer, just a guest. Besides, you brought me here.”

“True. But you look like a patron. And I don’t want to piss Kendall off. He runs things in Old West Town, plus, he’s the sheriff here in town.”

“Well, I don’t want to make him mad either.”

He took another step backward. “Let’s not tempt fate or my good judgment any longer then. Meet me at the wooden doors in the bank. I’m not sure I can be trusted to keep my lips off of you right now. Do you remember how to get there?”

She nodded.

“I’ve got to talk to someone briefly, and then I’ll be right there.”

“And you don’t want to be seen with me?”
