“I’m sorry, but can you speak up? I can’t fucking hear you,” Amelia grumbled.

Zach rolled his eyes but spoke up. “You’re pregnant.”

“I’m sorry,” Silas said for the first time since he’d entered. “She’s what?”

Silas’ eyes, though? Those were aimed at me. And he looked like he wanted to take out my teeth by punching me in the face one at a time.

“I thought that was due to the meds that were given to her,” Sawyer asked. “The lethargy.”

Sawyer.

Apparently the only one capable of forming coherent thoughts at that moment in time.

Son of a bitch.

“Now?” Zach asked. “Or before?”

I pinched the bridge of my nose.

“I’m on birth control,” Amelia said, weakly holding up her arm. “In fact, I’m pretty sure you were the one to assure me that this one was best for me. You told me when you put this alien piece of technology in me that…” Her breath hitched. “How am I supposed to go work for the FBI if I’m pregnant?”

Something changed on Silas’ face. His look went from ‘I’m about to rip out all of your ball hairs’ to ‘Oh, that’s interesting. How convenient.’

Sam and Sebastian, though?

They still looked pissed.

Damn, we should’ve emptied the room for this.

“You know,” Booth drawled. “This was exactly how Dillan found out she was pregnant. In a roomful of our SWAT team.”

I looked over at Booth with a tic starting at my eye and making its way down the left side of my face.

“Ashe, too,” Ford said jovially. “It’ll be okay, man. Just take a deep breath.”

They just didn’t understand.

It wasn’t that Amelia was pregnant.

I didn’t care—well, I cared—about that. I cared about the fact that she’d been beaten to hell and back. Oh, and that her family was now looking at me like they were about to kill me.

And I didn’t want to have whatever discussion they wanted to have because that would require me to leave Amelia.

And that wasn’t fucking happening.

“If my girl ever gets to the point where she needs medical attention, I will not be bringing her to this hospital,” Sammy muttered mostly to himself.

Bourne shot him an amused look. “And you think that by not bringing her here it’s going to change anything? What I would suggest is just keeping your penis wrapped. Then, maybe, you might not end up in the same position as all of the rest of them.”

Booth turned his gaze to rest on his brother. “Just give it time, brother. You may not have a pregnant wife yet, but I’m sure it’s only a matter of time.”

Bourne scoffed. “I’ll get her pregnant eventually, yes,” he agreed. “But it’ll be on our own terms. We’ll plan the child. We won’t be surprised with it.”

“What the fuck ever,” Sammy said. “You’ll pop one out all mysterious-like. One day you’ll just show up and have a baby and you’ll be like, ‘we didn’t know!’”

“How do you not know that your partner is pregnant?” Bourne scoffed. “I mean, early days? Sure, if you can ignore all the boob changes, mood swings, and eating all the food. Obviously, you guys did it just fine. But shit, to have that sprung on you?”

Before anyone could reply to that, Zach clapped his hands. “All right. Everybody out except her immediate family for a bit.”

The guys got ready to leave, likely only stepping outside the room, and not gone completely.

Apparently, I wasn’t hiding my ‘not together’ thing well.

And they didn’t want to go too far in case I fucking snapped. Which, at this point? It might be highly fucking likely.

“Hey, Bourne?” Amelia croaked as she cracked open one eye.

“Yeah, sweetheart?” Bourne asked, coming to a stop at the end of the bed that Amelia was curled up in.

“I hope that you find out that your wife is pregnant after she’s been that way for nine and a half months,” Amelia muttered. “And I also hope it’s twins.”

Bourne shook his head and laughed as he walked out of the room.

Zach grinned and continued to talk about the rest of Amelia’s injuries.

“Overall, she has several bruised ribs. A broken collarbone. A fracture in her cheek that we’ll need to keep an eye on, as well as a mild concussion that should sort itself out just fine.” He paused as he looked over my girl. “She has a lot of bruising, and things that’ll be tender for a about seven to ten days. Overall, though, she was very lucky. From what I understand, she suffered a hell of a beating.”

I swallowed hard and found myself reaching down for Amelia’s hand.

Even that was bruised.

The area around her poor little fingernails were black and blue.

That hand wrapped around my own, and I looked into Amelia’s beautiful eyes.

Both areas surrounding her eyes were black and purple.

I’d been avoiding looking at her for just that very reason.

“All right.” Zach clapped. “I wanted your family to hear what’s actually going on with you, but now I need the rest of y’all out. I need to do a few more tests, and a roomful of people isn’t going to be comfortable when I do them.”
