Chapter Eight

Two dayslater when I get to work, I’m surprised to see that there’s no one in the office, so I sit down at my desk and start looking through my emails. About half an hour later, Everett’s mom comes out of his room looking pleased with herself. She sneers at me when she walks past my desk. Then she stops and turns on her heels.

“Everett asked me to send you in, but can you give him five minutes then just walk in? No need to knock.”

“Okay,” I say, meekly. I don’t like taking orders from her, she looks like she’s the cat that got the cream.

“See you around, Saylor.” There’s joy in her voice which grates on me. She leaves and I hear the elevator doors open and then close a few seconds later.

Giving myself a few minutes I stand, smooth my skirt down and pick up my pen and paper. Yes, I’m old fashioned when it comes to taking any notes.

I don’t knock on Everett’s door, like she told me not to. But as soon as I open the door I know why she told me not to knock. Everett and Zara are locked in an embrace. Their lips are touching and Zara is staring at me, the look of triumph shining brightly in those green eyes of hers. Everett is facing away from me so he can’t see me.

I gasp, and I want to scream and shout. I want to call him all the names under the sun, but most of all I want to get out of there. He lied to me. He told me he loved me, but all along he and Zara have probably been laughing behind my back. Is he planning on taking the baby when it’s born and leaving me? Is he going to take my baby from me?

Not a chance.

I turn and run out of his office, grabbing my bag and jacket on the way to the lift, but I know it’s not going to be here for a long time, so I hit the stairs. I need to leave this building. I need to get away from those two liars. I want to kill them both, but I don’t want to give them the satisfaction of seeing me upset. I won’t let Everett Bennett destroy me or my child.

As I run down the stairs, all I can see in my eyes is the two of them with their lips locked. He had kissed me with those same lips only this morning. He fucked me before work this morning. God I want to throw up. I stop and lean against the wall. Taking deep breaths I try to slow my racing heart. I feel so sick, my head is hurting and it’s dizzy. I think I’m having a panic attack. So many thoughts are going around my mind.

I take my phone out of my bag and call Cass. “Can you meet me? I’m leaving work,” I say through the lump in my throat. “Cass, he’s cheating on me.”

“Say, slow down. I’m on my way home. Grab a taxi and come to my place. I’ll look after you and you can tell me what happened.”

“Okay, I’ll be there soon.”

As I put my phone in my bag, I realize that I haven’t had a call from Everett. I thought he would have at least tried to get out of the situation, tell me some more lies. He’s not chasing me down the stairs either. Maybe I was totally stupid to believe all the lies he told me. I was just some woman he wanted to fuck once and then it’s led to a lifetime of being together because of what happened that night.

Am I that gullible?

I keep running down the stairs, but when I am a few floors from the bottom, I hear a noise behind me and when I turn to look, secretly hoping it’s Everett coming to tell me what I saw wasn’t actually happening, I stumble. I try to reach out to grab the handrail as I start to tumble over and over down the stairs. I try to protect my stomach, and that means that I don’t put my hands out to stop me. I bang my head numerous times and my whole body hurts. But when I come to a standstill, I bang my head against the wall.

The last thing I remember before everything goes black, is the warm feeling of blood spilling out between my legs. I barely have time to think of my baby before the darkness swallows me and I pass out.
