Eric’s perfectly handsome face scrunched. “I don’t like it, but since there’s no talking you out of it, sure.”

I tapped his nose. “You are such a good husband . . . or whatever you are.” We were more than married.

“I prefer godlike lover.”

“I can live with that.” I smiled. “Okay, ready?”

He shrugged, so not on board with this plan. Under the cover of darkness, we came out from behind the bushes at Mateo’s townhouse. Well, I came out of the bushes; Eric jumped into the shadow on the porch. I made sure no one else was around and knocked on their door.

“Who’s knocking on the door so late?” Josie complained. “Did you order a midnight snack again?”

“Baby, I’m only snacking on you tonight,” Mateo replied.

I had to keep from giggling and gagging.

Thankfully, they both came to the door and opened it. Their eyes bugged out, and they spluttered until Josie burst into tears. “You’re alive.” She pulled me to her.

I hugged her fiercely.

“Are you okay?” She patted me down as if to make sure I was really there. “We searched and searched for you. We thought Eric Knight had kidnapped and killed you.”

She was half-right.

“I’m fine. In fact, I have something I want to show to you. But you have to promise me you won’t freak out and you’ll listen to me before you do anything rash.”

Josie continued to sob as she squeaked out a yes. I looked at Mateo. “Do you promise too?”

He was so stunned he only nodded.

“Come out, Eric.”

Eric appeared out of nowhere.

“What the hell?” Mateo shouted.

Eric quickly walked in and shut the door behind him.

Mateo held up the cross around his neck, and Josie grabbed the bat near the door.

“Whoa, whoa. You promised me you would listen to what I had to say.”

Josie pulled back the bat, ready to take off Eric’s head. “You evil, rotten—”

I flashed her my left hand, prominently displaying my mother’s ring. “We’re married.”

Josie lowered the bat while Mateo started reciting Catholic prayers.

“Mateo, we’re not evil spirits.”

He wasn’t so sure and took Josie’s hand.

Eric wrapped his arm around me. “I’d never hurt Sorrel.”

“Where have you been for the last two months?” Josie cried.

“It’s an interesting story. Do you have some time?”

Josie, though still shaking, waved toward the couch.

Eric and I took a seat and explained to them what we could and who we were. They thought we were yanking their chains until I healed Josie’s leg where she had cut herself shaving earlier that day. Mateo jumped out of his seat ready to call his priest, but Josie convinced him not to. It dawned on her how truly different I was the entire time she’d known me. A peace washed over her. And it wasn’t by any magical means.

By the time we parted, they mostly believed us, I thought. I was sure they would be fully convinced when they inherited a lot of money the next day.

Before we left, I hugged Josie. “Thank you for showing me what being a friend is all about. I’ll never forget you.”

Mateo got in on the action and wrapped his arms around us both. “I love you, bonitas.”

I loved them, too, and would miss them terribly. But with Eric by my side I never felt alone. I wasn’t sure what exactly we would do with our lives, but this I knew: we would do it together.

When we got into our car, I turned to Eric. “See, that wasn’t so bad.”

“You were right. Still, we better get out of here before anyone else sees us.”

“Good idea.”

We were about to pull out when I got a tingling sensation from my head to my toes and the car filled with light.

Eric and I both looked at each other, puzzled. We’d thought the book would no longer speak to us since the curse was broken. Eric reached into his seat’s shadow and pulled out the beaming book that now consisted of a piece from all the families. In its kaleidoscope swirled shades of green and moonstone. I took the book from Eric and carefully opened its pearl pages to reach the back of the book. The last line made me gasp.

“What does it say, my love?”

“Find your people, Queen Sorrel.”
