Kayla’s eyes nearly pop out of her head in surprise when her mother starts stalking towards me with purpose in every step. I just know that this isn’t going to end well for me, but I’m going to remain where I am and take it. If I have to be yelled at to make sure that me and Kayla can get out of here towards happiness.

“You need to get out of here,” she spits out, her tone filled with anger. “You can’t be here, sniffing around my daughter. She isn’t for you. She deserves so much better than some low life who drives around and doesn’t work.”

“I work…” I try and interject but it doesn’t get through. I might as well not bother.

“My daughter is going to be a lawyer and there isn’t anything that you can do about it. I don’t know who you are or where you crawled out from, but you need to go back there. Me and Kayla have been dreaming about this her whole life. You are not going to show up and mess everything up. It isn’t happening.”

“You have been dreaming about this,” I try. “Kayla hasn’t. It doesn’t make her happy…”

“What does happiness have to do with it? This is about success, about her getting on with life…”

She stares me down and I can’t help but wither a little under her gaze. I know now why Kayla has been so taken in by her for her whole life. This woman is terrifying and I’m sure that she’s controlling as well. Luckily for me, I don’t have any reason to fall under her spell but then I’m not her child, am I? Poor Kayla.

“I think it might be best for us to let Kayla decide what she wants,” I reply albeit very quietly. “Because she told me that she wants to have some time off and she wants to travel with me.”

“Well, of course she would say that if you’re going to get her drunk. She will say anything, but that doesn’t make it the truth, does it? People say the craziest things when they have been drinking. Especially if that’s something they aren’t used to because they have spent their entire lives working towards a goal of becoming a lawyer.” She cocks an eyebrow at me. “So, like I said, it’s time for you to get out of here.”

I stare behind her shoulder towards Kayla to try and see where the hell her head is at. Her mother can say one thing but surely the only person who can tell me the truth is her. If this is really what’s happening now, I need to know it from her mouth because my main aim is for Kayla to be happy. Even if I don’t get the girl and the happy ever after and I have to return to being alone, I need to know that she is okay, or I won’t be able to go.

“I’m sorry,” Kayla mouths at me, tears filling her eyes. “I’m so, so sorry.”

Ah, I see… I have lost her. Her mother has sucked her back in to the plan of becoming a lawyer and she feels trapped once more. This could really be the end for us here because I don’t know if I will be able to over shadow her mother, but I also can see that she isn’t happy about this. I might have to step away for now, but I don’t know if I can definitely go. I walk backwards towards my car as if I’m doing what is wanted for me, but I know that my time with Kayla isn’t over yet. Even if we end up just having one last talk, then so be it. If closure is all that I can hope for here, then so be it, but I can’t let go just yet. Not like this. I deserve more and so does Kayla. She needs to tell me what she’s feeling without her mother’s control.

Now it’s just to see if that is going to be possible. If we can have a moment without being watched. But that might not be possible. Not when she’s so controlled, but I have to hope…Chapter 16 – Kayla“Well, I have to say, Miss Smalls, I find you a very impressive woman.” The man tips his half moon spectacles and smiles at me. “Your education is wonderful, as is the experience that I’m sure you have gained from your mother as well. Everything that we have discussed in this interview has given me confidence in you.”

He’s right as well and I know it. I’m not being big headed or anything, but I have absolutely smashed this job interview. I have said everything that my mother told me to with the right level of confidence and it’s clearly paid off. With all the instruction that I’ve had, I could walk in to this job with my head held high. I have a feeling that this guy wants to give me the job as well, he’s looking at me like he’s trying to place me in the company.
