“Wow, so where is she right now? Are you together? You aren’t having this conversation in front of her?”

“No, no,” I chuckle. “She went home to get herself all sorted. I’m going to get her from home now.”

“That’s awesome. Well, I will let you get on with it then. Just keep in touch, okay?”

“Yeah, will do. Thanks again, Lance. Your advice always means a lot to me, I hope that you know that.”

We chat for a couple of minutes longer before it’s time for me to get on with my journey. Kayla is probably at her home now waiting for me, needing me to arrive already. She told me to give her twenty four hours but if her mother is anything like I imagine, then I’m sure she must be done with her already. I have actually messaged her a couple of times, but she hasn’t had time to get back to me yet. Not that I’m concerned, I will find out everything that happened once I see her anyway. I can only hope that it hasn’t been bad for Kayla.

As I start speeding along the road once more, I start wondering where me and Kayla are going to go first. As always, I’m easy to go wherever because I just love the adventure, so I’m going to let Kayla decide. Since she is the one who has led a sheltered life, I’m sure there are plenty of places where she wants to go. And if not, then we can just get in the car and go wherever. Let the sun set take us wherever it wants us to go.

“I can’t wait.” I grip on to the steering wheel tighter. “Oh my God, it’s going to be incredible.”

I turn the music up louder and sing out loud as I drive, the fantasy of my future coming to life in my mind’s eye. I know that me and Kayla have only talked about a summer of fun for now, but I’m certain that we are going to have more than that. I can just feel it. I can see us traveling for years and having an amazing time, falling deeper in love with every moment that passes. I actually can’t wait to open up my arms and my heart to her and to see where we could end up. Sure, it’s scary, but it’s also really exciting too. It’s going to be awesome.

Eventually, I pull up outside the address that Kayla has given to me and I park up the car. I stare at the lifeless, soulless building that she must have grown up in, my heart going out to her all over again. My childhood home was noisy, always full of sound, but I suppose that’s what comes with five brothers. But it was always warm and full of love as well, which could easily be felt from the outside. Not like this place.

“Time for me to rescue you, my little damsel in distress,” I mutter with a giant smile spreading across my face. “Time for me and you to start our new lives together, Kayla Smalls. I can’t wait for it.”

But just as I open up my car door and I take my first step out of the car, the front door to Kayla’s building opens. My heart leaps up in to my throat, excitement explodes inside of me, she must have seen me, and she can’t wait to get in to my car and for us to drive off in to our new lives together.

But it isn’t her I see right away. I stop as I witness an older woman with dyed black hair and a pinched up face stepping out of the building with a tight pant suit on. It must be Kayla’s mother, I can kind of see the resemblance, a little bit anyway. I imagine that this is what Kayla would look like if she spent years in a lawyer’s office.

And then my heart stops when I see Kayla behind her with the same poker straight hair, a similar looking pant suit on, and the same slightly pinched expression. There is a sadness on Kayla’s face that really doesn’t match the mood of today. Her clothes don’t either really. She doesn’t seem like a traveling girl…

What the hell is going on? I’m frozen to the spot, panicking, freaking the fuck out. Why does this feel all wrong? Why does it feel like my whole plan and life is falling apart right now?

Her mother spots me and judging by the way that her face changes, she’s heard about me. She also isn’t happy about me, which I guess is to be expected. I’m taking her daughter away from her carefully laid out plans, but I’m also taking her to a place where she will be happy and surely, that’s what any parent wants?
