“These two been keeping you busy?”
“Always,” Taylor laughed. “But it’s the kind of busy I like.”
“Glad to hear it.”
“Aunt Jen, can you help Daddy finish his work fast so that he can play with me?” Jenna asked, tugging on Jennifer’s pants.”
“I will do my utmost,” Jennifer nodded.
“But we’re going to have to help them, Jenna,” Taylor said, taking Jenna’s hand. “They’re going to need some peace and quiet. And that’s perfect because your room needs to be tidied up.”
“Aw.”
“Come on,” Taylor said firmly. “No excuses, please.”
“Okay,” Jenna sighed, allowing herself to be led away by Taylor.
I smiled after them and when I turned to Jennifer she was looking at me with an odd smile on her face.
“What?” I asked self-consciously.
“Nothing,” she said, with a shrug. “Just making some stray observations.”
“Any you’d like to share with me?” I asked.
“Not particularly.”
I rolled my eyes. “Well, I’m not going to wrestle it out of you. How about we get to work instead?”
“Sounds good.”
We spent an hour going over all the clients and new projects coming up, and by the end of the hour, I was ready for a break. I snapped my laptop shut and rubbed my eyes.
“How about a little pick-me-up?” I suggested.
“I can’t say no to that.” Jennifer nodded. “What do you have?”
“Rum, whiskey, beer, and wine,” I replied. “Red and white.”
“I’ll go with a beer then,” Jennifer said.
I went to the kitchen and got two cold beers from the fridge. Jennifer was stretching when I came back to the table.
“So,” I said, handing a beer over to her. “How are things going with your sister’s wedding?”
“Oh, who knows?” Jennifer replied. “I don’t ask questions about it. I don’t need the lecture from my mother about my wasted life.”
“Bet she hates me,” I said.
“Oh, she does.” Jennifer nodded. “You’re the bastard who works me so hard that I don’t have time for a social life.”
“Did you try correcting her?” I asked.
Jennifer gave me a sly smile. “Why would I?” she asked. “This way someone’s the bad guy… and it’s not me. Her dislike of you suits me just fine.”
“Gee, thanks.”
“Oh please, you can deal with it,” Jennifer said. “Especially since your life seems to be headed in the direction of a happily ever after.”
