“Yes, exactly.” I nodded. “You can tell them that it was all me. That I’m the one who told you to bring Jenna to this location and that I came here soon after, took Jenna, and left town.”
“They’ll start searching for you then,” Sofia said uncertainly.
“Yes, but I won’t stay in the country for long,” I said. “I’ll take Jenna to Mexico or Canada… and from there we’ll get tickets to somewhere else, and we’ll never come back. Reed will have no one but you.”
Sofia’s eyes went wide with interest, and I saw a glimmer of hope flit through her face. “It’s the only way he won’t blame you for all this, Sofia,” I said, trying to make my offer sound enticing. “Let me leave with Jenna.”
Sofia frowned. “The moment you leave, you could call the police,” she said.
“But I won’t.”
Sofia narrowed her eyes at me. “I don’t believe you.”
I felt my heart constrict and I knew that my idea was slowly unraveling. She would never let us just walk out of here without any insurance. She was not insane enough to believe me apparently. At that very moment, my phone started ringing. Sofia and I both looked down at the phone lying between us. It was the first distraction, and probably only distraction I would get. With Sofia’s eyes on my phone, I decided to act.
I pushed Jenna behind the large pillar and then lunged towards her, aiming to grab the gun from her hand. Sofia gasped and stumbled backward as I came towards her. I tried to make a grab for the gun, but she slipped from my grasp and turned to protect it from me. I realized that she had lost grip of it. She was clinging to it with two fingers, and if I fought a little harder, I might be able to gain control of it.
I heard a scream that sounded as though it had come from Jenna, but I couldn’t be sure, and I didn’t want to turn around to make sure. Every second counted, and I didn’t have any to spare.
“Get away from me, you bitch!” Sofia screamed.
I grappled with her, but she was surprisingly strong. Maybe it was just that she understood now that she had more to lose because she fought hard against me. I felt her kick and pain spread through my leg, but I still kept struggling with her. Her blonde hair flew in my face, and I tried to scratch her face as my other hand still tried to get the gun.
I heard her gasp and grunt, and then I heard it, a clear gunshot sound whizzing through the air. It was so loud that I froze for a moment… Sofia did too. Had she really shot me? I couldn’t feel anything… I couldn’t feel pain. But then I felt my body fall backward, and I realized I no longer had control. She had shot me… but I didn’t think she had meant to. I saw her eyes frozen with fear… somehow, it looked like she was the one that was shot.
I could hear, sirens in the distance, but I wasn’t sure if that was my imagination or not. I closed my eyes, but bright light still seeped through my eyelids. When I opened them again, I saw Jenna’s face hanging over mine. Her beautiful dark eyes were filled with tears, and I felt their moisture on my cheek. I tried to speak to her, but I couldn’t open my mouth.
I tried to reach for her, but I couldn’t raise my hand. I felt my eyes closing against my will and no matter how hard I tried to fight the darkness, it engulfed me with an uncompromising grip.
