“I want to be here when she wakes up.”

“She’s probably going to be really out of it even when she does wake up,” Jennifer pointed out. “In any case… I don’t think she’ll wake up in the next few hours. I think you have time to get a quick bite to eat.”

“I’m not hungry,” I said again.

Jennifer sighed. Then she dragged a chair towards me and sat down beside me. “I thought you might like to know that Sofia is being detained without bail this time.”

“Good.”

“It looks like she’s going to be serving time.”

“Good,” I repeated. “There’s too much evidence against her. Taylor recorded her threats at the playground too; there’s no way she can get out of jail time.”

“She might get a reduced sentence though, because of her father.”

“I know.” I nodded. “But it’s something.”

“She’s going to pull through,” Jennifer said bracingly. “I have no doubt of that.”

“She is going to pull through,” I said, with determination. “She’s strong…. stronger than even I realized.”

Jennifer smiled. “Then I think it’s safe for you to take a breather,” she said. “Go on; I’ll stay with her.”

“But—”

“I’m sure spending some time with Jenna will help, Reed,” Jennifer pushed.

Allowing myself to be convinced, I nodded and stood up. I kissed Taylor gently on the forehead and then headed out of the private room I had secured for her. Jenna was sitting right outside with Taylor’s friend. She was a friendly woman, and she seemed to have struck up a friendship with Jenna.

“Daddy,” Jenna said. “Is Taylor up yet?”

“Not yet,” I was forced to say. “We need to give her some more time to rest.”

“Taylor’s a fighter,” Megan said. “She’ll be out of here by the end of the week.”

“Thanks for staying with Jenna,” I told her. “But would you mind if I stole her for a second?”

“Not at all.” Megan nodded.

I offered my hand to Jenna, and she slipped hers into mine. We started walking down the corridor in the direction of the hospital cafeteria.

“Do you remember the last time we were here?” I asked.

“Uh-huh.” Jenna nodded solemnly. “I was sick.”

“You were very sick,” I replied.

“Taylor saved me then too,” Jenna said.

I realized she was right. Taylor had saved my daughter twice now, and in turn, she had saved me too. I realized just how much I owed this woman. She was more than just the love of my life. She was very possibly my savior and my guardian angel.

“That’s right.” I nodded. “She’s quite the hero.”

Jenna smiled, but then I saw her smile falter a little.

“What is it, sweetheart?” I asked.

“Is she going to be okay?” Jenna asked.
