“Me too.” I nodded.

We sat at the small table in the kitchen, which had yet another beautiful, if limited, view of the city’s magnificent skyline. Once Jenna was done with her pasta, we went to her room where Jenna proceeded to introduce me to all her toys. Her introductions had just wound down when I heard the sound of a door click shut, and I knew that Reed was home.

Jenna did too because she threw her teddy bear back into her toy chest and ran out of her room yelling, “Daddy’s home.”

I followed behind her and saw Jenna rush up to Reed, who grabbed her under the arms and swung her up over his head before placing her gently on his hip.

“Hey, my girl,” he said, placing a kiss on her brow. “How was your day?”

“So much fun,” Jenna said immediately. “I cooked.”

“You cooked?”

“Uh-huh.” Jenna nodded. “Taylor showed me how to make pasta. We saved some for you.”

“That’s good because I’m starving.” Reed smiled as he set Jenna back down on her feet and turned to me. “Good evening.”

“Good evening,” I replied.

“Everything went all right?”

“Swimmingly.” I nodded. “You have a wonderful daughter.”

Reed seemed to really appreciate that compliment. He looked at Jenna. “Did you do all your homework?”

“We didn’t have homework today.”

“Well, why don’t you go put on your pajamas then?”

“Aw,” Jenna said, with disappointment. “Do I have to?”

“Yes, you do.” Reed nodded. “Go on; I need to speak to Taylor for a moment.”

She pouted slightly, but she didn’t argue further. She headed off to her room, and Reed turned to me. “I’m sorry about this morning. I meant to go over everything with you but—”

“You were running late,” I interjected. “It happens to the best of us.”

“Did you run into any problems today?”

“Uh, not really,” I said. “The washing machine was a little difficult to figure out, but I managed.”

“Oh, you did a load?”

“Um, yeah.” I nodded. “There was a lot of laundry.”

“There was,” Reed said, shaking his head. “I’ve been meaning to get around to it but… I’ve been dropping the ball a lot lately.”

“Well, that’s what I’m here for,” I pointed out. “I took care of the laundry, and I tidied up the main living spaces as well as Jenna’s room.”

“Oh… well, that’s great.” Reed nodded. “But in the future, I’d prefer you get Jenna to clean up her own room. She needs to learn to do some chores around the house as she gets older.”

“Of course,” I said, impressed that Reed was down to earth enough to understand the importance of assigning chores to a child.

“I thought I’d have more to tell you,” Reed said. “But I’m too tired to think at the moment.”

I smiled. “Don’t worry, if I have any questions I’ll ask.”

“Sounds like a plan.” Reed nodded. “I’ll say goodnight then.”
