“Well, you are the boss,” Jennifer said. “I’ll hold down the fort in the meantime.”

“I’m giving you license to hire as many new employees as you see fit,” I said. “I don’t want you sacrificing your entire life to the publishing house. But since you’re going to be taking a larger role in the company, there’s a significant pay raise in it for you.”

“I’d have done it without a pay raise,” Jennifer pointed out.

“I know,” I said and smiled.

Jennifer patted me on the shoulder. “You’re a good man, Reed,” she said whole-heartedly. “You deserve to be happy.”

“I will be happy,” I said. “So long as Jenna and Taylor are safe. I know now what I need in my life now to be happy, and it turns out money can’t buy it. It never could.”

“I could have told you that.”

“Remember that vision for my future that I shared with you?” I asked.

“Of course I remember it,” Jennifer said. “It was yesterday.”

I chuckled lightly under my breath. “I want it to be true.”

“I gathered as much.” Jennifer nodded. “Why else would you choose to take a six-month break from work.”

“It’s not like I’ll disappear or anything,” I said. “I’ll pop in every now and then to make sure things are running smoothly. But I just want to focus on my family now.”

Jennifer nodded. “I don’t blame you,” she said. “After everything you and Taylor have been through, I would want to do the same thing.”

“You’ve been in my life for a long time, Jen,” I said. “I’d forgotten how good of a friend you really are. You’re my best friend, in fact.”

Jennifer smiled. “Don’t get all sentimental on me now.”

“I’m going to ask Taylor to marry me soon.”

“I’m not surprised.”

“I’m pretty sure she’ll say yes.”

“Me too.”

I smiled. “I would like you to be my best… woman? What do you say?”

Jennifer gave me a wink. “I’ll be there: tux and all.”
