“So… we have a huge favor to ask of all of you,” I said.
“Sure.” Jennifer nodded. “What is it?”
“Taylor and I need to run down to the hospital,” I said. “Just a routine check-up—”
“It’s not a check-up at all,” Taylor said, cutting me off. “I’ve just been a little tired lately, and Mr. Overprotective here thinks I need to see the doctor.”
“Actually, that might be a good idea,” Megan said. “You were complaining of headaches yesterday.”
Taylor glared at Megan, and I smiled. “See?” I said. “I’m not the only one who thinks visiting Doctor Smith is a good idea.”
“I’m sure it’s nothing, Taylor,” Jennifer said. “But why not make sure? We’ll be happy to hold down the fort while you two go see the doctor.”
“The girls won’t even know you’re gone,” Lily said.
Taylor sighed, and I saw her realizing that she would get no help from our friends. “Fine.” She nodded. “Let’s get this over with. You’re going to feel really silly when Doctor Smith tells us that nothing is wrong.”
“I hope so.” I nodded.
We grabbed our coats and headed out the door. It didn’t take us long to get to the hospital, and once we were there, we got an appointment and waited patiently in the waiting room. We had to wait half an hour, which wasn’t bad considering how much time we had spent waiting for him in the past few weeks.
When we got in to see him, I had to go through all of Taylor’s symptoms because she seemed intent on playing it all down.
“Let me see… so you’ve been experiencing headaches, nausea, fatigue, and minor swelling.”
“Very minor,” Taylor replied. “And just my feet.”
“I see,” Doctor Smith said, and he looked a little amused. I decided that was a good sign.
“It’s nothing serious, is it, Doctor?” I asked. “I mean… this is normal in recovery for patients like Taylor?”
“Uh… I wouldn’t say that,” Doctor Smith replied.
Taylor and I exchanged a glance. “Should we be worried, Doctor?” I asked, with my heart in my throat.
“Oh, not at all,” Doctor Smith replied. “In fact, this is the one kind of sickness that I think you should be ecstatic about.”
I frowned. “What do you mean?”
Doctor Smith turned to Taylor. “When was your last period, my dear?” he asked bluntly.
Taylor stared at him for a moment, and then realization dawned. “What… oh no… I’m not pregnant, Doctor,” she said confidently.
I blinked and then realized that Doctor Smith had seen the obvious where I had failed too. I had been so wrapped up in the Taylor’s ‘condition’ and her recovery time that I hadn’t equated her symptoms with anything other than the gunshot wound that had kept her in the hospital for two weeks.
“Are you sure?” Doctor Smith asked.
“I mean… yes.” Taylor nodded, but she didn’t sound sure.
“So you did get your period recently?”
“Uh… I think so,” she replied uncertainly.
“You think so?”
“I can’t really remember,” Taylor said honestly. “It’s been a busy two months, and I haven’t really been keeping track.”
“Well, there’s one way to find out,” Doctor Smith smiled. “I’ll send a nurse in with a pregnancy test.”
