“How long have you worked for him?”
“This is my first week,” I admitted.
“No way.”
“Yeah.”
“Have you been a nanny for long?”
“This is my first stint as a nanny,” I revealed. “I’m lucky though; Jenna is such a lovely girl.”
“She looks a sweetheart,” Lilly agreed. “And the girls seem to have hit it off.”
I looked towards the two young girls, who were chasing each other around the bamboo garden. “It certainly seems that way.”
“We should organize a play date for the two of them,” Lily suggested. “Or should I be talking to Reed about that?”
“I think that would be best.” I nodded, feeling like this whole situation was a little more than I was ready to handle.
After we had finished with the Hello from Japan exhibit, we parted ways with Millie and her mother after exchanging numbers and promising the girls that a play date would be set up in the near future. Then we left the museum with the intention of heading back to the apartment. Since it was Sunday and I had the afternoons off, I stopped outside the museum to say goodbye to Reed and Jenna.
“Jenna, sweetheart, I’ll see you tomorrow, okay?”
“You’re leaving?”
“Yes.” I nodded.
“But… why?” Jenna asked, and she looked crestfallen.
“Taylor has the rest of the afternoon off, Jenna,” Reed stepped in. “Say goodbye.”
“No,” Jenna practically screamed, as she grabbed my legs. “I want you to stay.”
I put my hand on the top of Jenna’s head. “Jenna, honey, I’ll see you tomorrow morning.”
“No, I don’t want you to go yet.”
I looked helplessly at Reed, who looked just as lost. He knelt down so that he was at eye level with his daughter and he tried to extricate her arms from around my legs, but Jenna just held on tighter.
“Okay, you know what?” I said. “I’ll hang around with you for a little while longer. How’s that?”
Jenna let go of my legs and smiled. “Can we go to the park now?” she asked triumphantly.
Reed looked at Jenna in shock and then shook his head at her. “Jenna—”
“Please?” she asked, slipping her hand into his. “I want to show Taylor the kites.”
“I’m sure Taylor has already seen the kites.”
“But I’d love to see them again,” I said.
“Yay,” Jenna said, thrilled as she grabbed my hand and Reed’s at the same time and started dragging us down the street.
“You don’t have to do this,” Reed told me, lowering his voice. “This is your afternoon off.”
“I don’t mind,” I told him. “Really, I’m just glad that Jenna’s having a good time.”
Reed looked distinctly uncomfortable however, and I wondered if he felt like I was butting in on his one-on-one time with Jenna. It was a little too late for me to feign an excuse now, however, so I had no choice but to head over to the park with both of them.
