Chapter Nine

Reed

“What are you doing?” Jennifer asked as I stood up.

I frowned. “I’m getting ready to go home.”

“Now?”

“Yes,” I said. “Why?”

“It’s only five o’clock.”

“Isn’t that when most people head home?” I asked sardonically.

“You and I are not most people,” Jennifer pointed out. “We live and breathe the work.”

“Well, I’m trying to make some changes,” I said. “And I have Jenna to think of.”

Jennifer frowned. “Okay… I just thought…”

“What?”

“Didn’t you just hire a full-time nanny for Jenna?”

“So?” I demanded. “Does that mean I have the right to be completely absent from her life?”

“Whoa, I didn’t mean it like that,” Jennifer said immediately. “I just was surprised, that’s all. I mean… you hardly ever left at this time… even before Jenna had a nanny.”

“If you need me to look at anything else, you can just email me at home,” I said.

“Will do,” Jennifer replied, as she walked me to the building lot where my car was parked. “We have a meeting with Chelsea Stone tomorrow.”

“I remember.” I nodded. “Ten o’clock?”

“Nine,” Jennifer corrected. “In the morning.”

“I want to have a meeting at the end of the week,” I informed Jennifer. “The entire staff; set it up.”

“Friday morning?”

“Friday evening,” I said. “Just in case it runs a little late. I don’t want this meeting interfering with anyone else’s projects.”

“Got it.”

We entered the parking lot, and Jennifer changed gears again. “So, how is the new nanny working out for you?”

It was the first time she had asked, and I tried not to give too much away. “She’s good,” I replied shortly. “She and Jenna seem to have really bonded.”

“That’s a relief.”

“A big one.” I nodded.

“Especially after…”
