It was clear that Jenna couldn’t understand. “I want Taylor, now.”
“Jenna, please—”
“Is it because she was yelling at those mean doctors?”
I frowned. “What?”
Before Jenna could answer, a nurse walked in with Doctor Farris. The doctor looked delighted to see her up and talking, and she introduced herself to Jenna with a smile on her face. Thankful that Jenna was distracted, I turned around and realized that Jennifer was standing behind me.
“How much of that conversation did you hear?” I asked as Doctor Farris examined Jenna.
“Most of it,” she replied.
After Jenna’s examination was done, Doctor Farris turned to me. “Her vitals are strong and healthy,” she said. “The recovery time will be fast because she’s so young. But you need to watch her and be careful.”
“Of course,” I said, noticing that the nurse was fiddling around with some of the tubes that Jenna was hooked up. “What is she doing?”
“Don’t worry,” Doctor Farrow assured me. “We need to give her a mild dose of painkillers, otherwise she won’t be able to get the rest she needs. She’ll be out soon.”
I went to Jenna and held her hand as she drifted off to sleep. A few seconds later, the room was silent again, and it was just Jennifer and me. I sat down, and she came to sit beside me.
“You look better.”
“The shower helped.”
“I told you it would.”
“You want a prize or something?” I asked.
Jennifer smiled. “I see the old Reed’s back.”
“Thanks for staying.”
“Of course.”
I paused. “Do you know what Jenna was talking about? She mentioned Taylor yelling at two doctors.”
Jennifer gave me a sideways glance that told me this was what she had wanted to talk to me about yesterday when I had stormed in and fired Taylor.
“What?”
“This wasn’t Taylor’s fault, Reed,” she said. “The moment Jenna’s fever spiked, she put her to bed and called the doctor you had on retainer.”
“Mueller?”
“That’s the one.” Jennifer nodded. “He showed up, did a fast examination of Jenna, declared that it was just a virus that would pass and left. Apparently, he was not really interested once he knew that the nanny had called him in. Taylor got the feeling that he just assumed she was panicking needlessly and wasting his time.
“Because she felt Mueller hadn’t helped, she called the second doctor you had on retainer,” Jennifer continued. “He was pretty much a repeat of Mueller, and when Taylor insisted he do his job and examine Jenna properly, he told her he didn’t need to be insulted by the help, and he stormed out. But he did confirm what Mueller had said about it being a virus. So Taylor watched her carefully, but when her fever spiked again and the chills set in, she panicked and called both doctors again.
“Mueller answered, but he was abrupt and dismissive, and Cleats or whatever his name was didn’t even bother to answer. That was when Taylor bundled up Jenna and caught a cab to the hospital. The doctor said that if she had waited even one more day, it might have been too late.”
“Fuck,” I said, at last when Jennifer was done with her story. “I feel like a complete moron now.”
“That’s because you are,” she said gently. “But in this situation, I think you can be forgiven for being one. You were scared; Taylor will understand.”
“I fired her.”
“So re-hire her,” Jennifer said. “Jenna obviously loves her to death, and you’re not going to be able to find another nanny who’s that invested in your kid. By the way, you should know that Taylor never left the hospital.”
