“Uh-huh.”
“Can you put him on, please?”
“Uh-huh.”
A second later I heard Reed on the other line. “Did you have a question about the shopping list I gave you?”
“No, it’s not that,” I said.
“What’s wrong?”
“Uh… I don’t… I’m being followed,” I said, forcing out the words and realizing that they sounded completely paranoid when I said them out loud like that.
“What?”
“I know it sounds crazy,” I said. “But Reed… I’m not making this up. I just got a threatening call—”
“You did?”
“Yes.”
“What did she say?” he demanded.
I noticed that he used ‘she’ instead of a more generic ‘they.’ “I’m watching you. So you better watch your back,” I repeated verbatim. “Those exact words. And the person who called me, they were in the supermarket.”
“How do you know?”
“There was an announcement just now, and I heard it through my phone.”
“Fuck,” Reed said, and I was thankful he didn’t make me seem unhinged in any way. “Forget the groceries and get yourself back to the apartment, immediately.”
“But—”
“We’ll talk once you get here.”
I nodded and then realized that Reed couldn’t see me. “Okay,” I said. “I’ll head over there right now.”
“And keep an eye out,” he said.
I pushed back the sudden fear that rushed up to my throat. “Okay,” I said again.
