Chapter Eighteen
Taylor
I was staring at my computer screen when Megan walked in. It was almost eight o’clock, but I wasn’t in for the night. I had just come home to do some laundry and pack a few fresh things for the coming week.”
“Oh my God,” she said, the moment she saw me. “Hello, stranger.”
“Come on… you see me all the time.”
“I see you for like five minutes every other day,” Megan said. “You zoom in, and then you zoom right back out again. Not that I can blame you, I would want to rush back home to my hottie of a boss too.”
I smiled but said nothing. I hadn’t told Megan that Reed and I were seeing each other yet. I knew she’d just start planning my wedding, and that was the last thing I wanted to think about. Especially since the huge bombshell that Reed had inadvertently dropped on me last week after the first time we had slept together.
At the time it had felt huge… colossal even, and I had battled with telling Reed immediately. But something had always stopped me. How would he take it? Would the truth weird him out or would he find it a weird twist of fate that we could laugh about later? I barely knew how to wrap my own mind around it, so I couldn’t even come close to predicting how Reed would feel about it.
Sometimes life was so cruelly ironic that it blew my mind. How was it even possible that of all the men in New York I had managed to be hired by my stepfather’s son? I realized that this meant that Reed was my stepbrother. I knew that should creep me out a little, but it didn’t. We weren’t related in any way, and we hadn’t grown up together.
I had been aware that Brady had been married before, but it wasn’t like he had ever spoken about his first marriage, so I hadn’t even known that he’d had a son. I kept resolving to tell Reed, but every time I came close to trying… I would freeze. As days went by, I became convinced that this wasn’t as big as I had made it in my head. It didn’t matter really; we were two adults who cared about one another. Why ruin that by bringing up unnecessary ghosts from the past?
Deep down, I understood why I was keeping this from Reed. I was just scared that he would see this as a reason to avoid dating me and I didn’t want that to happen. In a short space of time, I had fallen for Reed, and I wasn’t willing to let him go. Ending the relationship meant more than just losing Reed. It meant losing Jenna too.
“Are you here for the night?”
“Um, actually, no,” I admitted. “I just came to get some clothes.”
“Of course you did,” Megan said, shaking her head. “You do realize that you’re living with them, right?”
“I… wouldn’t say that.”
“Just because you wouldn’t say it doesn’t mean it’s not the case,” Megan pointed out. “You’re totally living with him.”
“Them,” I corrected. “Jenna lives there too.”
“But I bet she goes to sleep early,” Megan said, raising her eyebrows. “And then you and Mr. Hottie can have a little adult time.”
I blushed scarlet, and Megan laughed loudly. “You are so transparent; you totally have the hots for this guy.”
“I don’t deny it.”
“I’m glad to hear it.” Megan nodded. “Maybe you should make a move on him.”
“What makes you think I haven’t?” I asked.
Megan eyed me curiously. “Have you?”
I laughed. “I’ve got to go.”
“Haveyou?” Megan demanded again.
I packed up my laptop, grabbed my bag, and headed towards the door. “We’ll chat soon.”
“Call me, bitch,” Megan screamed after me. “We need to talk.”
Laughing, I headed towards the elevators. I took the subway back to the penthouse, and by the time I arrived, Jenna was already asleep, and Reed was in the living room with an open bottle of wine.
“Did she give you any trouble?” I asked.
“Of course.” Reed nodded, as I settled down by his side. “She kept insisting she was going to wait for you before she went to bed. My expert storytelling put her right to bed though.”
