“Hello?”

“Reed, it’s been a long time.”

I sighed. “Not long enough,” I replied. “Hello, Mr. Burton.”

“I just got an upsetting call a few moments ago.”

“What about?” I asked, pretending to play dumb.

“I think you know what about.”

“Mr. Burton, the last time we spoke you assured me that you would get Sofia the help she needed.”

“And I did,” he replied, cutting me off. “She went to rehab, and she spent almost four months there.”

“Well, apparently that stint in rehab wasn’t nearly long enough,” I said. “I’ve been getting nuisance calls from someone for months now. Since I’d had my numbers changed directly after the restraining order was put in place, my mind didn’t immediately jump to Sofia. But as the nuisance calls progressed, I began to suspect her again.”

He paused.

“I’m told that you have evidence incriminating Sofia?”

“That’s correct,” I said. “I wouldn’t have made the accusation or pressed charges had I not had proof. And I have plenty of it.”

“You’re pressing charges this time?”

I gritted my teeth together. “She did more than just stalk me and my family this time, Mr. Burton,” I said. “She started sending threatening letters—”

“To you?”

I hesitated. “To my nanny,” I said, refraining from referring to Taylor as my girlfriend. I didn’t want Sofia’s father to know my business.

“To your nanny?” Mr. Burton replied. “Why would she send threatening letters to your nanny?”

“To get an answer to that question, you’d have to ask your daughter,” I said. “She actually followed my nanny through a supermarket not long ago. I had to hire a bodyguard to make sure she wouldn’t get close to Jenna or Taylor again. The first time around, I refrained from pressing charges because you assured me this would never happen again. But this time I’m not letting it go. I have to protect my family.”

“Of course I understand all about protecting one’s family,” Mr. Burton replied. “Sofia is my family after all.”

“I’m not withdrawing my charges,” I said firmly. “Not this time.”

“And that’s your final word on the matter?”

“It is, yes,” I replied decisively. “I gave Sofia a chance, and she refused to take it.”

“Very well,” Mr. Burton replied. “Then I’m afraid we’ll see each other in court, Reed. It’s nothing personal I hope you know that. But as you said, every man needs to protect his family.”

“I understand that,” I said with a grudging respect for the man.

I hung up on him and headed back home to my girls. I was happy, but there was a little nagging doubt in the back of my mind. Mr. Burton was going to bring his best lawyers to the game to make sure that his daughter would never see a single consequence for her actions. I wondered if he was doing it to preserve her reputation or if he was motivated by pure and genuine love. He didn’t strike me as a sentimental man, but then I hardly knew him.

The moment I stepped through the door to the penthouse, Taylor came rushing at me. “Hi,” she said. “Is everything all right?”

“For the moment,” I said, looking around. “Where’s Jenna?”

“She’s in the kitchen, setting the table for dinner,” Taylor replied. “We didn’t think you’d take this long.”

“Sorry, got held up at the police station.”

“I thought that was where you were headed.” Taylor nodded. “Did you get her?”
