Chapter Twenty-Seven

Reed

“Hey,” I said, as I answered the phone.

“What do you mean ‘hey,’” Jennifer barked at me. “We have a meeting in like five minutes. I walked into your office only to be told that you’d left like a half hour ago.”

“I’m sorry, I forgot about the meeting until five minutes ago.”

“You forgot?” Jennifer asked incredulously; then her tone changed as she assumed what might have pulled me away from work on such short notice. “Why, is there something wrong with Jenna?”

“Uh… no.”

“Taylor?”

“No.”

Jennifer’s tone changed back into annoyance. “Then why are you not here?” she demanded. “What could be more important?”

“They have specific visiting times here,” I replied.

“I… what?” Jennifer said. “Where exactly are you?”

“I’m at the local detention center.”

“Detention center?” Jennifer repeated. “As in… jail?”

“That’s another word for it.”

“Why on earth are you there?”

“Something’s been bothering me in the last few days, and I realize it’s because I don’t really have any closure about this whole stalking incident. I want to see Sofia behind bars. I want to talk to her.”

Jennifer was quiet for a moment. “Do you really think that’s a good idea?”

“I’ve been mulling this over for the last two days and yes… I think I need to see and speak to her.”

“To gain closure?”

“To an extent,” I replied. “I think I just want to make sure I was right about her.”

“What about the restraining order?” Jennifer asked. “I would think meeting her would violate it?”

“I’ll call in a favor,” I said. “It shouldn’t be a problem considering it’ll be within the station’s premises and there’ll be guards monitoring the meeting.”

“Okay, well… I suppose if you have to do this, you have to do this,” Jennifer replied. “I’ll just cover for you.”

“Thanks,” I said gratefully. “What will you tell them?”

“That you had a family emergency,” Jennifer replied. “They’ll have to be content with that. Good luck.”

“Thanks.”

I said goodbye and hung up. I was seated in a cramped waiting area until the guards allowed me access to Sofia. She had been moved into a separate private area of the detention facility, and I knew immediately that that was as a result of her father’s connections. While she was in jail, he was going to make sure she was comfortable at least.

After a few moments a tall, scruffy guard walked out a door to the left of me and beckoned me through. “You can come through this way,” he told me.

He walked with me to a room that had two doors and a table right in the middle. I sat down in a chair and waited for Sofia to be brought through from the door opposite me. It took them a couple of minutes, but finally, the door opened, and a guard led Sofia through. I hadn’t seen her in a while, but she hadn’t changed one bit.
