“Taylor is a hundred times the woman you are,” I said, lowering my voice to make sure the guard couldn’t hear me. “She’s the woman of my dreams.”
Sofia’s eyes popped. “I… what are you saying? You can’t possibly think of actually… being with her forever?”
“Why not?” I demanded. “She’s great with my child, she’s looks after Jenna and me, and I love her.”
Sofia recoiled back as though I had slapped her. “Don’t say that… it’s not true.”
“Why would I lie to you?” I asked calmly. “I’ve been in love with Taylor for a long time now. In fact, I should thank you for bringing us closer together.”
Sofia frowned and I could see her emotions rise to the surface. I could read every thought on her face, and it was immensely satisfying to know that she was locked up and she couldn’t hurt Taylor or Jenna ever again.
“What do you mean?” Sofia asked, with some semblance of calm.
“Well, after all the stalking you did, Taylor was frightened. I was worried, and I wanted to make sure she was safe. I suspected you right from the beginning you know. So I insisted that Taylor move in with Jenna and I until I had collected the evidence I needed to convict you.”
“I haven’t been convicted yet,” Sofia spat back.
“No, but you will be,” I promised her. “I’ll see to that.”
Sofia narrowed her eyes at me, but I saw from the tension in her hands that she was worried that I meant what I said.
“Taylor moved in with Jenna and I, and that’s when things happened between us. In a weird way, you were the indirect matchmaker.”
“Don’t say that.”
“But it’s true,” I said, with a shrug. “And I wanted you to know that.”
“She’ll never make you happy,” Sofia said, diving forward and gripping the table with both her hands.
She definitely looked unhinged as she stared at me with her large blue eyes with her hair matted around her head. It amazed me that at one point I had actually thought she was beautiful and dignified and interesting.
I remembered a date with Sofia right at the beginning of our tenuous courtship. She had been aggressive in her pursuit of me and that had taken the reins out of my hands for the first time in a long time. I think I liked not having to think that hard. So when she came after me the way she did, I had been relieved and flattered. After all, she was a charming woman from a respected family. I didn’t think anything could go wrong.
I had shared a little bit of my past with her. I had told her about Jenna’s mother and our rushed wedding. Sofia had held my hand and listened the whole time. When I was done speaking, she had leaned in and kissed me hard. We ended up having sex that night and nothing about that night had felt out of the ordinary. She had seemed like a normal girl. It had been a normal date, and I even felt like we had found some common ground.
But it had fallen apart shortly after. Her jealousy had magnified to such an extent that I was unable to ignore it anymore. And when I thought about how she treated Jenna even at the beginning… she was dismissive and uninterested; it grated on me until I realized I could never be with a woman who was so indifferent to my child.
“Only I can make you happy,” Sofia said.
“You never made me happy, Sofia,” I said. “You were a distraction from my life. You were a respite from being a single father. I never intended to stay with you for long, and I thought I made it clear on our first date. Do you remember I told you that I wasn’t interested in getting into anything serious with anyone? You told me that wanted the same thing and that’s the only reason it continued for as long as it did… until you met Jenna and you turned it into a competition.”
“It’ll be different now,” Sofia said, almost desperately. “I’ll be different now. I understand that Jenna is a part of your life. I won’t try and compete with her.”
I laughed. “You can’t honestly think that I’m here to offer you a second chance, right?” I asked. “We are over, Sofia; we’ve been over for a long time. And just to make it absolutely clear. Even on your best day, I would never have actually committed to you. You were never going to be the woman I made a life with. For me, that woman is Taylor. She’s the woman I love, and she’s the woman I’m going to marry one day.”
Apparently, that was the final straw. Sofia screamed as though I had struck her and then she tried to lunge at me from across the table. I backed up just in time to avoid her scratching fingers, but she was halfway across the table before the guard managed to catch her.
Another guard burst into the room, and between the two of them, they were able to restrain her and pull her out towards the second door. The whole time she scratched and screamed obscenities at me, at Taylor, and at the guards. I watched them drag her out of the room, and for the first time, I felt pity for her.
I left the detention facility a few minutes later, and the moment I was back in my car, I picked up my phone and dialed Taylor’s number.
“Hello?”
“Hi.”
“Hi,” Taylor replied, and I could hear the smile in her voice. “Don’t you have a meeting now?”
“Um… yeah.”
“Then how come you’re calling me?” Taylor asked.
I smiled. “I just… wanted to hear your voice,” I replied honestly.
