I don’t care.

ANYA

When we bringthe firewood in, Gage and Hunter are rummaging around in the small kitchen area. Theo builds the fire, and it adds to the cozy vibes in the cabin.

“Hey, you two!” Hunter calls from across the room. “Drinking games and snacks in the kitchen.”

I laugh, stepping forward to grab some plates. “Like what? Truth or dare?”

Gage shrugs, cracking open the whiskey. “Never have I ever. It has higher stakes.”

Within minutes, we’re all seated around the low coffee table by the fire, the dancing flames casting shadows across our faces. Hunter pours whiskey into each shot glass, passing them out. The place smells of woodsmoke, whiskey, and a hint of lavender.

Hunter slides a plate of cheese and fruit within reach. “We can nosh while we confess our sins.”

I settle onto a cushion, tucking my legs beneath me. The fire crackles behind us, providing a soothing backdrop. For somereason, it feels like the right time to be brave. “I’ll start. Never have I ever gone skinny-dipping on the Fourth of July.”

Theo and Gage don’t drink, but with a sheepish smirk, Hunter does.

Gage teases, “When was that?”

“A gentleman never tells.”

Theo snorts. “Since when are you a gentleman?”

“Since I made a promise to a lady, thank you very much.”

I smirk at him. “She must have been important for you to keep her a secret.”

I swear, I think he’s blushing. It’s hard to tell, aside from the bashful expression. “That night was my first time,” he admits.

Gage sits straight up at that. “Your first time was on the Fourth?”

Hunter nods. “Yeah, why?”

“When we were younger, the Fourth was a big deal for the Carver family,” Gage explains to me. “We used to gather at our father’s estate for barbeques, fireworks, and whatnot.”

Theo snorts, leaning back on one hand. “Please. Most of those gatherings ended in some kind of scandal. Cousins spiking the punch, or someone’s date jumping into the pool fully clothed.”

Hunter grins. “Or a certain Carver brother ditching the party to fool around with the maid.”

Gage’s eyes flash in amusement. “Which one, though?”

At that, Hunter’s grin turns sly. “I suppose it doesn’t matter if I spill the beans now. She retired. It was?—”

“Emilia?” Theo asks, astonished.

Hunter nods. “Why so shocked? I mean, I know she was like, twenty years older than me at the time?—”

“Me too,” Theo says, smirking.

Hunter blinks. “You and Emilia?”

Theo nods slowly. “When I came back the summer between freshman and sophomore year.”

Hunter chuckles. “We had our first time with the same woman? Cheers to that.” He raises his shot glass, they clink and down their whiskey.
