“No, it’s okay. It’s probably just a fluke. My period’s been late before.”

“If you’re sure.”

“I am.”

Yet two weeks later, when we were back home, my period still hadn’t come.

With a deep breath, I peed on a stick, slid the cover on, and laid it flat on the counter. I hid inside Axel’s arms as we waited for the clock to tick away the minutes.

If I was pregnant, I’d freak out. I wasn’t ready yet. I wanted more time with my husband.

It’s fine, it’s fine, it’s all going to be fine.

The buzzer goes off. The three minutes are up.

I grab the stick still facing downwards. “Close your eyes. We’ll look at the same.”

“One, two, three.” I turned the stick around at the same time we both opened our eyes.

Sure enough, there were two pink lines.
