He only smiled at me, and then reached out and held my hand, briefly. That was all. No promises. He was there. He’d continue to be there. For now, that had to be enough. We needed each other to get to the bottom of who tried to kill us, for our own survival.

I leaned back as much as I could and then when that didn’t work, I bent forward, leaning against the table. I was breathing in more of that fish smell, but in the moment, I didn’t care.

I was busy in my head, trying to prepare myself to meet Corey and the others again. Would I be able to tell when I saw them if they had done this or not?

Would I have the nerve to face them? What would I say?

I was about to find out.
