“I think this was exactly the right time for us, Van.” She smiled up at him. How had she missed this? He had been there, all along. Something told her he would always be there.If you’ll have me.
“I’ll take it.” He smoothed her hair from her shoulder. “I like having you here.” His hands pressed against her back. “It feels—”
“Right.” She rested her head against his chest, closing her eyes to listen to the steady beat of his heart. “Like this is where I belong.”
“I was thinking the same thing.” Van’s sigh was pure contentment.
“I know you’ve got plans and all but, maybe, we can stay like this for a few more minutes?” she murmured, burrowing against his chest.
“I’m in no hurry.” He pressed a kiss against the top of her head. “I’ve got what I want.”
After years of living with a hole in her heart, she’d accepted it as permanent and made the best of it. But Van’s words—his lovely gruff and tender voice—and the strength of his arms around her did the impossible. He filled her heart so full there was no room for holes or aches or hollowness. Just this. Comfort. Strength. Happiness. And love.
