I knew Levi thought I was a bad option, that I was going to break his heart. But the truth was that if there was one thing I was sure of, it was that I would never hurt this man. I would never break his heart because I’d rather rip mine out first.

“You need to trust me,” I said, and slid my tongue along his lower lip. “Close your eyes, stop thinking, and just kiss me.”

As his mouth parted, a low groan escaped me. I’d waited so long to have his lips back under mine, and now that I had him, there was no way I was about to let him go. Not without getting my fill of his sweet, sweet mouth.

I traced my fingers along his cheek and up his jaw, and then speared them in his hair. Levi slid his hand over my shoulder to tug me in close. I tangled my tongue with his, and when our chests met and a low moan rumbled out of him, I almost fell to my knees.

Fuck, that sound coming from him had my cock aching to get in on the action. But where I would usually be aiming for that, urging Levi to unlock the door, and let me come inside with him, I knew now what I had to do to win the trust I so desperately wanted from him.

Levi wanted me to prove he was more than just another notch in my bedpost. He wanted me to show him I wanted more from him.

Godfuckingdammit.

That meant going to bed tonight…alone.

Reluctantly, I pulled away, and as I released my hold of him, I brought my fingers up to touch my own lips, where his kiss lingered. “Delicious,” I said. “Good night, Levi.”

As I took a step back and Levi realized I was stopping, a frown marred his brow.

“Have sweet dreams,” I told him, and flashed a smile. It was all I could do not to shove him up against the wall. Instead, I made myself head off toward my suite.

You can do it. One foot in front of the other.

“Killian?”

At the sound of Levi’s voice, I glanced over my shoulder and knew if I didn’t get out of there quick, this gentleman act I was trying to pull off would go right out the damn window.

“Yeah?”

“Everything okay?”

Other than me sacrificing what I want more than anything tonight to prove I’m in it for the long haul? “Yeah. I had a great time today.”

“Okay.” Levi shook his head and quickly schooled his features back to neutral. “Good night.”

I gave a quick nod, and a second later he disappeared inside his room, and before I could change my mind and go to him, I ran to mine.

Twenty

Killian

“WAIT, STOP. LET’S bring up the sound on Killian’s mic and start again.” Our tour director, Patrick, paced in front of the stage, glancing back to the mix booth in the rear of the stadium to make sure the sound engineers were following his orders.

When I got the thumbs-up from the crew, I spoke into the mic, and they continued to adjust the sound until Patrick shook his head.

“Can we get another mic?” he called out. “Anyone?”

“No one’s coming to listen to Kill,” Viper said, rolling his eyes. “Just turn it off.”

I flipped him the finger as Levi called out from the wings, “I got it.” He emerged onto the stage a few seconds later with a new mic.

It didn’t escape my notice that he still wasn’t looking my way, and hadn’t other than a quick nod when we arrived at the venue. After finally thinking I’d gotten through to him during our day together, it was like he’d woken today with his walls back up.

Frustrating didn’t even begin to cover it.

I took the mic off the stand, and when Levi reached for it, I held on tight until he looked at me.

When he finally glanced up, I smiled. “Hey.”

“Hi.” Damn. Clipped and businesslike as ever, nothing like the man I’d gone to dinner with last night. For fuck’s sake. All that progress gone in one fell swoop.

He held the new mic out to me, and when I took it, he pulled the old one loose from my grip and walked back off the stage.

Seriously, what the fuck had I done? I’d been a perfect gentleman last night, when all I’d wanted to do was get him into his room and tear every perfectly starched piece of clothing off his body.

Levi was infuriating. Difficult. And more stubborn than anyone I’d ever met—and I worked with Viper, for Christ’s sake.

Levi was apparently keen on making me work for it.

Focusing back on the soundcheck, I caught Viper smirking at me from across the stage, and it made me want to go over there and knock the expression right off his face. Smug bastard had already caught his guy, and he’d made it look easy.
