“Right. I always knew getting involved with a client would be a mistake—”

“I’m not just some fucking client, Levi.”

“Aren’t you?” I schooled my features, as Killian took a step forward.

“No, I’m not, and you know it.”

“I don’t know anything of the sort. The last thing I heard was that I was nothing more than a casual fuck. So if that’s the case, I guess that makes you nothing more than my client.”

Killian’s hand whipped out so fast that I didn’t even see it coming, and before I knew it, he had my chin between his fingers and his mouth was hovering over the top of mine. A shiver raced up my spine from being so close to him again, and as I met his stare head-on, the hurt from seconds ago vanished, and in its place was something I couldn’t quite decipher, something fiery.

“Tell me, Levi. Do all of your clients make you tremble like this?”

I swallowed around the lump that had formed in the back of my throat and reached up to take hold of Killian’s arm. My intention was to shove his hand away, but the second my fingers touched his warm skin, they tightened around his wrist, where I could feel his pulse racing.

“Do they make your heart pound and your knees want to give way?”

No, they didn’t, and as Killian’s lips ghosted along my jaw to my ear, I held on a little tighter.

“Because that’s what you do to me. Every time I see you, think about you, hell, every time I close my eyes and fucking dream about you. You make my heart pound and my knees go weak.”

My eyes fluttered shut under the spell Killian was weaving, and when he lowered his forehead to mine and said, “I’m sorry,” I felt myself beginning to cave. I could feel his warm breath on my lips, as he cradled my cheek, and when he guided my mouth up to meet his, I blindly followed.

The first touch was gentle, a test to see what I would allow, and being the fool that I was, I parted my lips and let him inside. Just one more taste, I told myself, just one more touch. But the second Killian’s tongue found mine, I realized my mistake.

I’d had days to free myself from Killian Michaels, and within five minutes of being in his company, I’d given in to him again like the addict I was.

As he slid his fingers into my hair to angle my head for a deeper connection, I moaned into Killian’s delicious mouth and melted into his touch. Every move he made was designed to tear apart my resolve to steer clear of this man. But when he moved his arm to wrap it around my waist, I placed my palms on his chest and none too gently pushed him away.

“Stop,” I said, my breathing coming a little faster now as I took a step back, hoping the distance would also bring a little clarity.

As Killian’s eyes found mine, I saw the lust and desire swirling in them. But lust wasn’t enough, and I wasn’t about to put myself back in a position where I would ultimately end up hurt.

“Why? It’s pretty obvious you want me as much as I want you. Why are you being so stubborn about this?”

He wasn’t wrong, which was infuriating, but instead of responding, I crossed my arms and gritted my teeth, “if you haven’t got something nice to say” running through my head.

“I said I was sorry,” Killian said, and rubbed his face. “What more can I do?”

I touched my fingers to my lips where Killian had just kissed me, and thought it was a shame that that would be the last time I’d ever taste him. But this was the way it had to be. It was the best for both of us. I’d known that from the beginning, but Killian had just been too damn tempting to resist.

“Nothing,” I finally said. “There’s nothing you can do or say, Killian. It’s better this way. Better that it ended now instead of months down the track, when I was picking out china patterns for us and you were busy looking for a way out.”

“Wow.” All color drained from Killian’s face as he stared at me, the hurt re-entering his eyes. “You really do think I’m a piece of shit, don’t you?”

“Killian I—”

“No,” he said, and held a hand up. “I’m finally starting to get it.” Shaking his head, Killian reached into his pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper. “You know, I’ve done a lot of things in my life that I regret. Stupid shit, you know? But I never thought you’d end up being one of them.”

As Killian tossed the paper down on my coffee table, he added, “This is what Viper and I were talking about that day in the cafe. It’s a song I wrote after the first night I spent with you in Sydney.”
