“I’m going to go now.” Jeff responded.
“Sure. Yeah. Cool.” Jacob said. “See you at trivia.”
“Yes.” Jeff nodded to him, and then made his way into the room where
Joe had entered. Whatever the meeting was, at least he knew Joe. Curiosity
racked his brain for a moment, but to distract himself, he decided to
explore the space. See if anything jumped out at him.
“Look- I made it this far- but do you need me to stick around?” Teddy
asked.
“You’re abandoning me Teddy? In my hour of need?”
“I’m tired. Do you mind if I just sleep on your shoulder?” “Fine. I thought you’d keep me company at least.” Jacob groaned. “I’m your Familiar. I’m not your Companion.” Teddy chortled to
himself as he stuck his head under his wing and cuddled into Jacob’s
shoulder. To be fair, his balance was surprisingly good, and there was a bit
of comfort in having Teddy so relaxed and close to him.
He had expected the space to be empty, but as he turned a corner, to his
surprise, he found a kitchen that was swarming with activity. Entering, he
saw several older women buzzing through the space preparing a meal. “Darlene, can you grab me the pepper?” A red headed woman askedher voice thick with years of smoking.
“We gots two left. I’m gonna just cut them up and leave them in the
freezer for the broth.” The lady, presumably Darlene who wore a large
scarf around her hair, responded with a smile on her painted pink lips. Jacob had intended just to watch from afar but, as soon as one of the
women had spotted him, they swarmed around to investigate. “Darling, we got a new one!” One of the ladies chirped. She wore
nothing but green from head to toe. She was loud but her voice was sweet.
Her hands jingled as she worked from all the costume jewelry that she
wore.
“Which one are you talking about Darlene?” The red-headed lady
responded.
“No- My darling- check your ears Rhonda! We have a new person
helping us!” The loud lady, Darlene responded. “You are here to help
right?”
