“I guess so. I was- I mean my-” Jacob was unsure how to respond. How

could he describe his relationship to Joe? They weren’t dating…were they?

“I’m here with a friend.”

“A special friend?” Darlene chirped. Her glasses took up much ofher

face but she had a sweet smile and peach lipstick that coated much of her

teeth.

“Darlene, put that gossip away.” A red haired lady named Rhonda

responded. “Unless it’s good. You got a name, baby chicken?” “Jacob.” He responded.

“A lovely biblical name there. Jacob was a good one you know. Well…

sort of. He was fine really. Wrestled with angels and all that.” Rhonda

chimed.

“I’d wrestle him!” Edna chuckled. She was diminutive and boney, but

wore a large brown wig that sat lopsided on her head.

“You’d wrestle anyone with a pulse!” Darlene laughed.

“Sue me. My last one couldn’t handle me. Maybe this one could.” Edna

cackled.

“I’ll refrain for now. But it sure is tempting.” Jacob politely stated. “I broke him. Rode him like a rodeo bull. Heart gave out halfway

through.” Edna laughed. “To be fair, it’s the best way to go out!” “And how!” Darlene responded.

Jacob laughed to himself. These church ladies were filthy. He liked

them.

“But now we got work to do ladies. And we got such a cute little batch

of help.” Rhonda responded. “So tell me there, Jacob. Who is the one you

fancy?”

“I don’t really think it’s my space to say.” Jacob felt his cheeks getting

hot.

“Well, you got certain appetites I reckon.” Rhonda smiled. “I don’t know what you-” Jacob tried to say, but was quickly

steamrolled.

“You got a fancy looking bird there, and you’re wearing fancy pants.”

Rhonda smiled. “I got my son who’s about your age. I’m happy to set you

up if you need a little prodding in the right direction.”
