“Have you tried to call him?”
“No.” I bit my lip.
“Maybe you should start there.”

The next morning,I stared at my phone for hours. It was impossible to find the words to say to him after these few weeks apart.
What if he had completely written me off already?
What if I was the only one suffering?
My thumb hovered over his name in my contact list, but I couldn’t bring myself to press the dial button.
Get it together, Mattie. You can do this.
I stood up and started pacing the living room with my phone. Taking a deep, determined breath, I braced myself to call him.
The instant before my thumb brushed my phone, I jerked it back.
I had a better idea.
Swiping away my contacts, I pulled up an internet browser and searched for the next flight to Colorado.
ChapterThirty
My hands shookas I stood outside. For the past forty-eight hours, I had been running on nonstop adrenaline. Now that I was here, in front of the lodge, I couldn’t bring myself to approach the door. I wasn’t even sure he’d be here, but it was my best first bet to finding him.
I sucked in a breath and limped forward before pausing again. My ankle was starting to hurt a little from so much standing.
“Okay, you can do this.” I took rapid breaths in and out through my nose, trying to pump myself up. “Don’t be a coward, Mattie.”
“Mattie? What are you doing here?” My heart thumped out of my chest as I heard the voice that had been flooding my dreams since I left this place.
I turned around to face him.
Giles stood before me wearing his ski resort jacket that was dusted with a fresh layer of snow. His eyes were wide with surprise. Gently, he lowered the snowboard he was holding to the ground. Slowly and deliberately, he unclipped his helmet, keeping his gaze fixed on me the whole time.
My mouth hung open for a moment before I slowly closed it. All the meaningful words I spent hours going over in my head instantly drifted from my mind the moment I saw him.
“Hi,” was all I managed to get out.
“Hi.” He took a step toward me.
“I just…” I trailed off, rendered speechless by his eyes. “Wanted to see how the lodge was doing.”
The corner of his lip twitched, and the skin by his eyes crinkled. “Really?”
I let out a breathless laugh. “Okay, you caught me. I wanted to see how you were doing.”
He tilted his head. “I’ve been better.”
“Yeah?”
He nodded. “I was a lot better a few weeks ago.”
Relief flooded through my veins. “You were?”
