Whatever happened after that, I’d figure it out then.

I turned up the volume on the radio and sang along as I drove to Orion’s club.

“I fought the law and then, well, you know what happens next.” The music carried on underneath my improvised words. The law won.

“Yeah, yeah.” I pulled right up to the front of the club, all the spaces free in the daylight.

I fought the law and—

The song died when killing the ignition. “Take that, you stupid law.”

My questionable singing skills were much better than my being a pack-mule skills. I dragged half a magic shop with me towards Orion’s club Galileo for the summoning.

Orion was absolutely sure the deadly incubus knew how foolish attempting to sneak into his territory would have been, so his club was the only one not magically guarded by our spell, which allowed Lex and I to enter.

What nasty feud went down in their past that both men were still bitter enemies years later? My guess was that Orion had a lover, Taryn, the one he mentioned earlier, and he was one of Lex’s victims. Orion said Lex stole someone from him too. Then Orion swore vengeance and became a strictly no-strings-attached incubus, which totally wasn’t depressing or disappointing to yours truly.

For the first time ever, I was early. The door to the club was locked, so Orion probably got held up at his office. I dropped half the stuff by the door, giving me enough leeway to grab my phone from my back pocket. I twisted around to maneuver, and the knife headed for me lodged in the door instead.

"I warned you."

Bad Mother lurked on the other side of the parking lot. He launched another knife and I leaped away.

"You didn’t listen, now you’ll suffer the consequences." He pulled the next nightmarishly scary knife from wherever the hell and it soared towards me.

An antique grimoire worth so much I shouldn’t even be allowed to touch acted as my shield from the next attack. That felt sacrilegious but better it than my skin.

Heart racing, I abandoned all the supplies and began dashing around the side of the building to put room between me and all the lethal sharp objects. The freaking sneaky demon assassin chased after me. Crazy how a day could go fromnormaltograve dangerso fast.

I basically threw myself into the alley to avoid the next projectile, crashing down into some trashcans and now battling trashanda demon to escape. The garbage bags next to me exploded when violently introduced to his knife.

"Jesus!"

“Think again.” The bastard sounded amused.

My incredibly frantic getting upright and fleeing was nearly cut short by another freaking knife. Where the hell was he hiding them all?

And hurling them so fast! God, another zoomed at me.

I stopped it with literally no room to spare, reaching out with magic. It froze so close that I felt the tip of the blade against my frigging cheek.

A second later, the knife vanished and presumably returned to sender.

Great. That’s what gave him a seemingly endless supply of knives. He brought freakingmagic boomerangknives that he called back to him at a moment’s notice. And they looked scary enough to make one nearly lose control of their bowels, thick and jagged black blades made of some unusual material instead of typical steel.

Running away left my back open to the crazy death knives, so I stood my ground. As soon as he moved, I put up a shield.

A reddish, semi-transparent wall of energy formed between us and blocked the knife. I recognized the color, it was the color Orion and I created when mixing our energies together.

Orion’s energy was a dark burgundy like the color of fine wine, something rich and complex with layers and hidden depths. My energy was blue, sometimes a weak blue gray and sometimes dark and black, the blue barely visible, but always some sort of blue.

Our energy should come together in a shade of purple but magic sometimes overruled the laws of mixing colors. Instead of purple, our combined energy formed a vibrant bright red. Naturally it spoke to blood and the violence in our future, that if we worked together any longer one or both of us were gonna bleed. Anything else seemed too impossible.

But right now that bright red energy was saving my ass.

Bad Mother sent two knives at my shield next, testing the strength of the barrier. The combination of Orion’s power and my own held strong. Still, I probably shouldn’t give him an unlimited number of free shots.

"Stay,"I commanded the next knife and the energy poured forward, encasing the tip of the knife in a sticky translucent molasses.
