She looked over at me. “Nah, whatyougot going with Little Miss Thick’ums here?”

I scowled at her and started to duck back into my room. Mekhi’s eyes shot to me, freezing me in place.

“Mind your business, Khayla,” he warned her, his gaze never leaving mine.

Gillian sniffed. “Honestly, Khi, this isn’t even like you. She’s one cheeseburger away from?—”

“Ma!”

“Nah, I’m tired of her mouth. I’m leaving,” I exclaimed, storming into the bedroom.

I grabbed my purse and decided I’d send Kera or someone else to get my luggage later. I refused to stay here with thiswoman disrespecting me. I was sliding my feet into some ballet flats when I felt a strong hand close around my upper arm. I knew it was Mekhi but fuck him and his mama.

“Where you think you going?” he asked, pulling until I turned to face him.

“Away from here. She been insulting me since?—”

“This my fucking house. Why you listening to her?”

“She’s your mama!”

I tried to yank away from him, but he held me tighter.

“I got her. You ain’t gotta worry about her. But you ain’t going nowhere.”

“Mekhi—” I pulled against him.

“Farrah—” he backed me against the wall and held on to me. “Chill. Seriously.”

He leaned in until his mouth was right above mine and I felt the fight leaving me. My tongue darted out, and I licked my lips in anticipation. I didn’t have long to wait. He kissed me softly, his hands easing under the hem of my dress, his tongue teasing the seam of my lips. I lifted my arms to circle his neck but stopped when the sound of someone coughing intruded. Looking over, I saw Gillian standing in the door and she was not pleased. I tried to move away, but Mekhi held on to me

“Khi, what are you going to do about her?” she demanded.

That was it. I whirled around on her. “He needs to do something aboutyou. I can’t tell if you his mama or his girlfriend!”

She gasped. “Youbigbitch! You better?—”

“Nah,youbetter. I don’t know who you think I am, but I was invited here, and I expect to be treated like it!”

Gillian’s eyes flew to Mekhi. He just looked at her. I had to hide my smile. Pissed, she sucked her teeth.

“Well, I’m leaving?—”

“No, you not. Not until I can talk to you and get someone to be with you, so stop the bullshit, Gillian. But Farrah ain’t going nowhere either,” he spoke up.

“What’s going on, Mekhi?” his sister asked suddenly, stepping into the room with concern on her face.

He shrugged. “Some weak nigga got it out for me, which means y’all could be in danger.”

“Her, too?”

She glanced at me. Mekhi nodded.

“Yeah. Her, too.”

Gillian let out a long, loud sigh, and I almost started counting again. This woman was something else.

“Can’t you protect her somewhere else?”
