Mission Ice Out seems to be going too well
Kenz:
Yeah?
Me:
Guess they don’t want a passive doll
Kenz:
I can’t wait to hear more
Me:
Get better. I need my ride or die
Kenz:
Wouldn’t miss it
CHAPTER 32
Victory?
Harper
I dress for myself in the morning. Jeans and a t-shirt. My red Converse. I leave my hair down. When I get downstairs, I make my lunch, but don’t make extra for Caden. Grabbing my keys, I head out to my car.
My car. I didn’t realize how much I missed driving it until this moment. The freedom it gives me is almost euphoric.
I park in the far back of the lot away fromtheircars like I used to. Then I go in the side entrance so I don’t have to pass them. I skip the lockers and head to my first class. Getting there early, I sit and just take a moment.
Kenz slides into the seat next to me and looks around before smiling.
“How is this happening? I haven’t seen you without a dick attached to you since the first day of school.” She grins.
I glance around before leaning in close to her and whisper, “I decided to give them what they wanted, a docile pet, for the day yesterday.”
Kenz’s hand is on her heart. “Oh, fuck, I thought you were going to tell me you gave in and had sex with them.”
I chuckle. “No, still trying to get out of the deal.”
“What are you going to do about your birthday tomorrow? Are we going to grab pizza and a piece of cake or not?” Kenz glances over her shoulder at the door, but Luke hasn’t come in yet.
“I think we can manage it.” I sit back in my chair and turn to face the front. “We can talk in art.”
She nods and smiles. This feels right. Talking to Kenz. Not worrying about the horsemen.
When I take out my sketchpad, Tanner’s number falls out. I almost forgot about it. I program it into my phone before crumpling up the paper and sliding it into my pocket to throw away later.
Imagine the punishment I’d be in for if the horsemen found another guy’s number on my phone.
Luke strides into the room, and I feel a jolt go through me. Seeing him will get easier with time. He crosses to his desk and sits down without talking or touching me. I stay facing the front, but he still does nothing.
Finally, I bend over my sketch of the dragon sculpture and start adding some shading. By the time Mr. Wick comes in, I’ve almost forgotten Luke is behind me.
Class passes, and nothing happens. When it ends, Luke gets up and leaves. Okay? I’m still worried this is a trap, but this is okay. This is what I wanted. Them to not pay attention to me.
