Ry jogged to catch up to him. “So much for getting a workout in.”

“Maybe when we get back.”

“Yeah. Although this sounds like a big one. We’ll probably end up being gone hours.”

“It’s a multi-car wreck. Semi involved too,” Kari, his team’s nurse, said behind him. “They’ve put a call out for High-Life as well as us.”

Shit. If they’d called on both medivac units in the area, it had to be bad. “How many cars?” Jake asked.

“I think they said six plus the semi. And a school bus,” Georgia, his co-pilot, told them as she moved past them to the other side of their chopper.

“Fuck. That’s not good.”

“Nope.” Kari swung the back door of their chopper open and jumped in.

“Let’s get these things in the air,” Ry shouted as he ran for his ride.

They wasted no time, both teams well-oiled machines, moving through pre-flight checks, and within two minutes of the alarm both choppers were lifting off and heading south toward the highway.”

Jake flopped down on the bunk and groaned. “Fuck, that was rough.”

“Yeah.” Ry lowered himself to the bed next to him. “It’s always toughest when there are kids involved.”

“They were damn lucky today.”

“Fucking hell.” Ry shook his head. “I swear, when that wreckage came into view, I feared the worst.”

“You’re not wrong. I have no idea how there weren’t any fatalities. Or how there was nothing more serious than broken bones.”

“Me either.”

They’d been back about ten minutes. He’d showered and changed. Not because he’d gotten blood on his uniform like Kari and Tate but because he needed to clear his head and nothing cleared it like a hot shower.

“Hey, did Maz get back to you about what was up with Mallory?”

“No. But that call I had before we went out might have shed some light on what’s going on.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah. I think my new nanny may have told Lory she had to move out.”

“What?” Ry jackknifed upright. “Seriously?”

“I’m not sure but if I take into account what Maz said about her lunch with Lory and what Mrs. Russell said, then yeah, I think the new nanny had something to do with the fact Lory went in to see Mrs. Russell about another rental.”

“But you don’t know for sure? It could be something else.”

“I suppose. But what else could it be?” Jake shook his head. “No. The more I think about it, the more I’m convinced the nanny said something to Lory.”

“Why would she do that?”

Jake didn’t want to tell his friend his suspicions about Shelly Armond. Mostly because he’d been doing a good job of hiding the truth from himself up until now. Sighing, he said, “She turned up to work this morning looking like she was sidling up to the bar on singles night.”

“Meaning?”

“Plunging top, short skirt, sky-high heels. Face made up with enough makeup she’ll need a sandblaster to get it off.”
