“Damn, that doesn’t sound good.”
“Nope. And until now I’d pushed it out of my head. Figured I’d worry about it tomorrow or if she did something other than the eye-fuck she gave me before I left for work.”
“Ah, man. You’re going to have to let her go and find someone else.”
“I know it. I was avoiding it though.”
“Have you checked in on nanny cam since we got back?” Ry asked.
“No. Figured I’d look in on Mad before I get some sleep. I’m hoping we’ll be lucky enough not to have another call out before morning. I’ll have to be up all day, no sneaking in a nap with Mad in the afternoon, if I’m going to be searching for a new nanny.”
“True. Although you can take Maz up on her offer. She’ll even stay at your house so Mad is in his own bed. It’s not like Zane has a bed he sleeps in. That boy sleeps wherever the hell he is. My chest, Maz’s chest, his car seat or pram, he even slept through his bath yesterday.” Ry chuckled. “God, I hope he stays this easy for life. We’ve been so lucky with him so far.”
“I hear that. Mad has always been easy. Even when I first got him, I had no trouble putting him down to sleep. Or with anything really.”
“Pull up your nanny cam and check on Madman. I think I’ll check on Maz and Zane and see if they’re up so we can do a video call before I crash.” Ry got up and stretched.
Jake grabbed his phone and clicked into the monitor app. At first he wasn’t sure what he was seeing. He expected to see Mad curled up in his crib, blankets kicked off like usual. Except that wasn’t what drew his attention.
No, what held his gaze was the woman sleeping in his bed.
He couldn’t believe what he was seeing. He’d set up a room on the second floor for Shelly with everything she’d need for an overnight stay. Instead she was staying inhisbed!
“What the fuck?”
“What? What?” Ry leaned over, grabbed Jake’s hand and turned his phone so he could see what had Jake swearing. “What the fuck is she doing?”
“I think it’s obvious.”
“Oh, she’s obvious all right.” He bent closer to the screen, eyes squinting. “Is she naked?”
Jake shuddered. “Fuck. Don’t say that. I was successfully ignoring that until you opened your mouth.”
“Sorry, man. You are totally going to have to get rid of her.”
“Ya think?” Jake clicked out of the app and dropped his phone on the bed beside him. “What the hell am I going do?”
“Tell her she’s fired.”
“Well yeah, I get that. There’s no way she’s not after that. But I meant about Mad. I struggled picking a nanny in the first place. You know I don’t trust like I used to and now the first time I take a chance, this happens.” He shoved his fingers through his hair in frustration.
“It’ll be fine. Maz will watch him so you can take your time finding a new one. And Mallory might give in and help out now too. Especially if it was the nanny who sent her looking for somewhere else to live.”
“I hope I’m right about the reason she went to see Mrs. Russell.”
“What do you want to do about that?” Ry asked, a hand pointing at Jake’s phone.
“I can’t do anything now unless I leave work.”
“You could call Mallory and ask her to go over there.”
“To do what, tell the nanny she’s fired and then stay with Mad?” He laughed but there was no humor in it. “As if. I’m not making the poor woman deal with the one in my bed. Christ! She’s sleeping in my bed!”
“It’s kind of creepy.”
“Kind of? It’s super creepy. Beyond creepy.” Jake shuddered. “Morning can’t come soon enough.”
“You’ll have to get the locks changed.”
