“Where did you get this?”

“They finally released the names of the men involved in the human trafficking ring in Texas to the public. Not that we didn’t know who they were. But who’s missing from the list?”

“Lucas Holt,” I murmured, scrolling quickly through the list again to confirm that we were right.

Every other man was listed except him.

He had been William’s right-hand man. Trained by William. And was just as dark and lethal as I was.

I knew for a fact that he’d bought a stolen girl. He should’ve been on this list.

“Weird . . . right?” Beck asked.

I grunted.

“We know Mickey likes to make offers. Looks to me like someone might’ve been offered something, and he took it.”

“And destroyed the other ring in the process?”

Beck nodded. “Exactly.”

I handed the phone to him then continued flipping my knife as I thought. I’d only met Lucas Holt a few times, but I remembered him clearly.

With a hard nod, I said, “All right. I’ll keep an eye out for anyone, but I’ll be looking for him.”

And waiting for her.

I walked with purpose toward downtown Raleigh from my trailer that evening, folding my arms over my clenching stomach as every step made my worries grow. As every minute made my chest ache.

Weak.

I was so lost in my own mind I didn’t realize where I was—didn’t see him—until he let out a relieved sigh that sounded too loud in the fading light of day.

“Jesus fuck, Jess.”

I jolted, my steps faltering when I looked up and saw Beck. Hands dragging over his face and through his scruffy beard as he headed in my direction.

Shit. I still owed him.

“I don’t have any money,” I said.

His eyes darted over my face, lingering for too long as they did. “I’ll get it later. I’m just glad you’re all right.”

I forced out a laugh and went to step around him. “I’m sure you are.”

“Where have you been? I haven’t seen you in days.”

“You have other clients, Beck. They keep your pockets full and their veins fed.”

“Damn it, Jess,” he gritted out and grabbed my arm to stop me. “I don’t think I’ve gone a day without seeing you in . . .” He shrugged helplessly. “I don’t think I’ve ever gone a day without seeing you. I’ve been fucking terrified.”

I was glad he looked like he’d been through hell.

I hated that another part of me wanted to comfort him and tell him what was—

No. He’s done nothing but ruin you.

“You haven’t answered your phone.”
