It’d been taken from me. “Sorry.”

“You’ve been missing for days.”

I’d been down the hall from him. “I’ve been around.”

“Jessica.”

“Beckham,” I mimicked.

He flinched. His face fell, but a deep longing swirled in his eyes. “Don’t call me that.”

“Aww, was that only okay when you still wanted me?” I asked with a smirk and began walking away. I rounded on him and curled my lip when he stopped me again. “I have a street to get to if you want to get paid.”

For a long time he held on to me, studying me. “If you’re in trouble, you know I’ll be there for you.”

That had never been a question. He’d made that clear from day one, even before he’d begged me to be his.

“Yeah, Beck. I know.” I pulled away gently and nodded in the direction of downtown. “Gotta go.”

I had only made it a few more streets over when my favorite SUV pulled up next to me.

“Here comes trouble,” I mumbled pathetically.

I didn’t stop walking no matter how many times it stopped in wait.

I wasn’t doing anything wrong.

After a mile, the errand boy stormed out of the car and shoved the phone into my hand.

“Well, that’s rude,” I murmured, giving him a sly grin. “I might like rude on you.”

His cold, dead eyes bored into mine until I held the phone to my ear with a sigh.

“This is ridiculous.”

“You should’ve gotten in the car,” the man growled.

“I’m walking. And not your definition of walking. I’m literally walking. I don’t see any reason to have a conversation with you or stare at your pretty boy when I’ve done nothing wrong.”

I blew a kiss at the errand boy when his top lip curled in an impressive grimace.

Pretty boy didn’t come close to describing the terrifying man in front of me.

His eyes were like Kieran’s. Like he could deliver your death with a look alone.

But where Kieran had a mysteriousness about him and exuded sex, the man in front of me looked closer to a corpse. It was unnerving.

“Tell me why you’re walking in the direction of your street.”

“Tell me why you’re such a stalker,” I retorted.

“I like to keep a close eye on what belongs to me.” I opened my mouth, but he continued before I could speak. “If I were you, I’d reconsider what you’re about to tell me, Jessica.”

I belong to no man.

“Good. Now tell me where you’re headed.”

I glared in the direction of my street and bit back a curse. “Home.”
