“So much it frightens me.”

Her breath caught in her throat, those words caused her such joy. And since he wouldn’t get up, was determined to wallow in his own guilt now, she went down on her knees to cup his face in her hands.

“You are the most gentle man I have ever known. You wanted to hate me, but you could not. You wanted to hurt me, but you could not. I should feel sorry for you that your very nature defeats you, but I must be glad for it instead, because it has given me a truly remarkable man to love. And I do love you, Selig. He grinned suddenly, and then he laughed and hugged her until she cried out for breath. “We make a fine pair, you and I, with so much to be sorry for. And yet I am too happy just now to feel very sorry. Do you thinknowwe can begin anew?”

Her nod brought more laughter from him, and it was infectious this time. If Erika was not mistaken, and she was sure she was not, she was going to have a great deal of laughter in her life from now on—and more love than she had ever counted on.
