“We can fix that, Sally. We’ll just make it look like a larger gun was used. How long will it take you to get home and be baking bread, or something?”

“A few hours…”

“Then, we’ll set up the scene and let it take its own natural course. Ye didna worry yerself. Caelan and I will take care of it.”

“I can help,” offered Lizzie.

“Nay, lass, ye’ll stay out of it and will be with one of us at all times.”

“I think I should tell them I shot him and not involve any of you,” said Sally.

“There’s no need to risk it. And, if ye tell them the whole truth, as ye say, they might try to blame Lizzie. Nay, Sally, yer late husband was a bastard of the first order and deserved to die. Ye did the world a favor, and as Gav said, ye saved Lizzie. We are beholden to ye and will make this right for ye.”

“You’re sure?” she asked.

“My husbands don’t lie. I’ll never forget what you did for me, ever. I’m just sorry you had to live with him.”

Lizzie took Sally’s hand and walked her out to her horse.

Sally mounted and then looked down at her. “When I first heard about Bridgewater, I thought how awful it must be to have to marry two men and provide them with sexual congress, but you seem not to mind. Is it because they saved you from the noose?” Sally closed her eyes and shook her head. “I’m so sorry. That was incredibly thoughtless and inappropriate of me.”

Lizzie grinned. “I wasn’t too happy about it at first either but now, even after so short a time, it just seems normal. Gavan is the stern one, and I know, if I misbehave, he will correct me. Caelan is gentler but, if he has to spank me, he has a wicked hand. Once I’ve been punished, then I am forgiven. But, every night, I fall asleep in their arms, nestled between them, loved and happy. It might be different for you. I’ve never had anyone who cares for me, at least, not that I can remember. Now to have two men of my own? It’s as though a dream I never knew I had has come true. Will you be all right?”

“I honestly don’t know but, at least, I won’t have to worry about him coming home drunk and having to lock him out of the spring house. He wanted to do vile things to me, like what he wanted you to do.” She shuddered.

“What he wanted to do wasn’t vile, he was. Find some happiness, Sally. You deserve it,” Elizabeth said.

Caelan joined them, wrapping his arm around Lizzie. “Aye, Sally. Be happy, if ye can, and thank you again. Ye didna have to worry about yer husband. We’ll take care of it.”

CAELAN

They watched her as she walked to the path down the side of the hill and waved as the sheriff’s widow rode away.

“Jesus, Gavan. If his wife had not shot him…”

“Lizzie would have been fine. We weren’t far behind, and our bride had the good sense to play him along. I’m not sure how she’s going to feel about sucking cock for a while, but she’s strong, and she does enjoy it.”

“Ye think we should let her be tonight?”

Gavan shook his head. “No, I fear if we let her get it in her head that she did something wrong, or that we don’t want her because of it, it could be months, or years, before she gets over it.”

Caelan bristled. “But if that’s what it takes for her to heal?” he growled.

“Calm yerself, Cae. We’ll give our girl whatever she needs for as long as she needs it. But she’s going to need us to be strong for her, as well. Ye do know she had no choice, right?”

“Do ye want me to punch ye in the nose again?” he snarled.

“Why would you punch Gav in the nose? Again?” she asked, joining them.

Gavan hung his head. “He had every right to punch me. When I found ye gone, I thought ye had run away…”

She surprised them both by laughing. “I’ll bet you were furious,” she said, trying not to giggle, but failing. She turned to Caelan, “Did he threaten to beat me within an inch of my life?”

Caelan started to chuckle while Gavan glowered. “Nay, I think what he said he was planning to welt yer pretty arse and then fuck ye until ye couldn’t walk.”
