I nod.
Even his favorite color is unoriginal.
The rest of the night is just as torturous as this back-and-forth. I thank every deity in existence when the night is finally over.
When we step out of the bar, he says, “I’ll drop you off. Where do you live?”
“Oh, you don’t have to do that. I’ll just call an Uber.”
“Nonsense. I’m taking you home. I won’t hear of you taking an Uber.”
I try to protest but he stops me by opening the passenger door and ushering me into it.
I’m dying on the inside. It would appear I celebrated a little too prematurely, because now I have to endure another crawl through traffic to get to my place.
When he pulls up outside my apartment building, I can’t jump out of the car quick enough.
He comes around and stands in front of me, “I really enjoyed myself tonight.”
Really?
“So did I.”
He smiles then all of a sudden his eyes close and his head starts lowering toward me as he puckers his lips. As in, actually puckers his lips at me.
Just before he makes contact, I take a step back.
He opens his eyes and truly looks surprised.
“Listen, I had a good time, but I don’t feel a spark between us.”
He huffs. “Typical…” He trudges away from me. I think I hear him say, “Fucking cock tease,” as he gets back into his car before he zooms off, but I can’t be sure.
Once his car disappears around a corner, I head into my apartment building.
When I get home, I’m about to start my nighttime routine then my phone rings.
It’s Amanda.
“You went on a date with Eugene and didn’t tell me?” she says as soon as I answer the phone.
“I wouldn’t call it a date. We went out for drinks. It was no big deal.”
“He seems to see things a little differently. He said you wasted his time. That you barely said anything all night and that he had to carry the conversation all by himself.”
I consider defending myself, but in the end, I opt for the truth. “He’s probably right.”
“Why did you go out with him if you were going to act like that?”
“It was so awkward. Also, I blame you. You’re the one who has been hounding me to give him a shot. I finally did, and it didn’t work out.”
“You have a point. I did encourage you to give him a chance, even though you said over and over that you had no interest in him.”
“Wow, you’re being so understanding about this.”
“Don’t get used to it.” We both laugh. “One of these days you really should give a guy a fair shot.”
I mime hanging myself from a noose. “Okay Amanda.”
