I cringe. “Ew! What are we, in middle school?”

“Maybe, because I want to go steady with you.”

I roll my eyes and laugh.

He tilts my chin up and places a chaste kiss on my lips then my forehead.

“You won’t regret this. I will do everything in my power to make sure that you don’t regret this.”

“Thank you.” I gaze into his eyes. “I believe you.”

He kisses me again. “What time does Brady get back from his sleepover?”

“In a couple of hours. Frank and Clarice, his friend Drew’s parents, are taking the boys out to brunch.”

“Good, I would like to fuck my girlfriend, one more time before I have to go.”

I shake my head at his choice of words.

His hand goes to my back where he starts drawing circles into my skin.

I practically melt.

I have developed deep feelings for Adam, but I would be lying if I said I wasn’t terrified about this.

I’m a little bit of a control freak, so not knowing what to expect where all of this is concerned is doing my head in.

I guess the only option I have is to take the days one at a time and hope for the best. And, remind myself that this is a good thing.

ADAM

Idon’t like salad. I never have.

Ever since I was a child, there’s something about raw vegetables that has never sat right with me, and contrary to my mother’s words, I never grew into it.

Knowing this about me, you would think that it was totally normal that I am sitting in my office at lunchtime pushing my salad around with my fork. However, my frustration has little to do with the fact that the restaurant got my order wrong and more to do with who isn’t in my life right now.

I toss the salad onto my desk and climb to my feet.

“This is ridiculous,” I say to the empty room.

When I step out of my office, Jennifer, my assistant, startles, drops her sandwich, and jumps to her feet.

“I’m stepping out for lunch today. I may be back late.”

“Yes, sir,” she says. “But you have that meeting with Mr. Fain andWhite Stripe Airlines. Will you be back for that?”

Shit. Arthur and I are trying to get White Stripe to advertise with us. This is a big meeting.

However, I need to do this.

“Arthur can handle that meeting on his own. Just make sure to call him and let him know that I won’t be attending.”

“Yes, sir.”

I nod at Jennifer then leave.
