“Drug ring.” I agreed. “And Corrine oversees things. So what do the others do?”

He squinted his eyes and pursed his lips. He looked goofy and adorable, and I remembered why I liked him so much. He could be so scary and dangerous, but really he was kind of a teddy bear.

“Last time I talked to Dante, he was running some liquor stores. Not sure if there’s anything devious there or not. Not sure about Tully, although the two usually hang out together.”

“Tully?” I laughed at the name.

“Toulouse.”

“Which ones are they?” I started trying to count them on my fingers.

Desi shook his head and sighed with annoyance. “Which ones do you think are left?”

“Gluttony, Envy, and Greed.” I rattled off. “And there’s Dante, Tully, and who else?”

“Ginata. You’d like her.”

I smirked. “You said that about Ludovica too.”

He laughed. “True. With my luck, you’d probably find Tully to be your favorite.”

“Which ones he?” I brightened. Desi shot me the middle finger.

“Nice try. How about this. We do this last job, and then I’ll tell you who is who.”

“Desi,” I started but paused. “If everyone has a job within the Seven Sins that brings in money, what do you do?”

Desi’s smile slipped off his face, and he stopped talking completely. His eyes darkened, and he didn’t look at me. It was then that it hit me what we were doing. Why we were going to New York.

“Desiderio Amato, is this guy a mark?” I demanded.

“What if it is?” he asked sharply. “Don’t worry about it.”

“Desi, you can’t do this,” I said.

“Uh, why not?”

“Because it will break your curse. You promised me you wouldn’t do it.”

Desi blinked rapidly. It was like he had just remembered the curse.

“I’ve gotta kill him, Scout. I already said I would.”

“So just give back the money. Or whatever it is, she’s giving you for it. You don’t need it.”

“It doesn’t work like that. So what if the curse is broken? I’ve already told you I’m not going anywhere.”

That’s what you say now. But when you remember everything you had with her, you’ll change your mind.

“Scout. My curse will end eventually,” he said softly. He reached out for my hand. He found it and squeezed. “Why not have you be there when it happens? I’d love your face to be the first one I see when it’s over.”

My eyes began to glaze over, and I looked out the window. He didn’t understand.

“What are you thinking?” he asked. I laughed dryly.

“I should have just left that night. I let you seduce me with all the pretty promises that you can’t keep.”

“How do you know?” he demanded. I let go of his hand and focused on the cars passing us.
